Election 2020 Election 2020: It's (almost) over! (maybe...possibly...ahh who are we kidding, it's 2020!)

No, just that when you punch the choices into the screen and are done with your ballot, the machine also prints out a receipt with the ballot information. Not who voted it, but what the votes were.

That way if there are any issues with the electronic machines or tabulations it would be caught and any questions could be settled by just counting the paper ballots.
The problem with that is that from what I'm aware part of the reason why you don't have any proof of who you voted for is so people can't sell their votes because no one will be able to see if they actually voted for the person who bought their vote or not.

Well guess what? People are just selling their freaking ballots now.

The receipt is going straight into a sealed ballot box attached to the machine. It literally exists just to produce a contemporaneous paper record of every vote. So if the computer crashes or the numbers the machine spits out seem off, etc., there is still a way to get an accurate count.

I'm aware that's been happening for a while. Though that one is solvable if the authorities actually bothered to track down and punish people who did that instead of looking the other way even when it gets shoved into their faces.

Oh that makes sense yeah. Chances are people would still find a way to fuck with things like that but it'd be a nice buffer against technical problems (provided the receipts themselves don't run into problems of their own anyway.)

In addition to the plain language list of votes/timestamp/machine, you also include an encrypted string that contains all of the data.

So if someone tries to stuff the ballot, they would need a lot more detailed information on the process and would have to individually encrypt each ballot for the time/date/machine/number of votes cast that day so far/current vote totals for all races.

Basically, you make it so that anyone who could steal the election is already someone in a position where nothing you could do could prevent them from doing so anyways.

Honestly, I have nothing against election security against fraud, but do think people tend to get way more invested in it when losing than when winning.c
Eh I would argue that there's always been a long running push from the American right wing against voter fraud. Hell I remember seeing some talk about it from the Obama era and there probably was more even before that but I didn't really keep track of American politics at the time so I can't say for certain. The current situation is arguably that sentiment reaching a boiling point when faced with circumstances that seem rather questionable to say the least.

There have been complaints since(IIRC) at least the Clinton years about voter ID, yes, but I'd guess things will get more serious about this now.

Dude, it's not the GOP who fight any sort of voter ID laws, or pretty much any vote security measure that makes cheating harder.

Like, a lot of conservatives and moderates get called racists for wanting voter ID. The Left says 'well but those poor blacks and latino's are too poor to afford voter ID or too busy to get it done, thus requiring voter ID is racist'. This isn't any sort of exaggeration either, I've seen both arguments used multiple times on Left-wing forums when the issue comes up.

Well, that and Illegals wouldn't be able to get them. 😜

This seems like a weird argument to me. A Texas DL has a $33 application fee, and it lasts for 8+ years, and a simple ID costs only half that. Saying these people are too poor to afford $16 for an 8 year investment? Especially when it's needed for very popular amenities like legally purchasing alcohol or tobacco? And makes proving your identity for any number of legal purposes (besides voting, like job applications) easier?

And for the time investment, while getting my first driver's licence took a lot of time, I had an ID before that from when I was twelve-ish years old. That ID only took an hour or two. And again, that ID was good for multiple years. And now at least in Texas you can renew your ID/DL online for the same price and maybe 30 minutes of your time.

I find myself skeptical that anyone sound of mind would look at what an ID can allow you to do, look at the cost ($16 and a single afternoon), and decide that they can't fit that into their budget.

Why would people on the left assume that minorities could not do that?

Edit: And even if they do assume that, wouldn't the best solution for someone who wants to help be to help them get ID's? If these minorities do not in fact have ID, then surely concerned individuals could provide 16 dollars for such a cause? Because as I already said, having an ID is useful for general quality of life in the US, not just for voting.

2nd Edit: In the interest of fairness, I went and looked at some of the other state fees for DL/ID, as well as how long they last. Some states have more expensive fees for IDs, along with a shorter renewal period. Massachusetts IDs for example, only last for 5 years, and cost $25. I still think that it's not that expensive, despite coming out to an equivalent $3 more per year than Texas.

it's as hard to get an M rated video game or to see and R rated movie as it is to vote if democrats think THAT LITTLE of black people then that's a level of racism and superiority beyond belief, that's slave plantation owner levels.

I'm not saying the GOP isn't sincere, I'm saying that both sides become super invested in election fraud when they think they're behind because of it and care way less otherwise. I'm totally on board with something like the Tippy system and would expect even "literally turn his posts into statutory law" would be better than the current system.

I'd personally have legal ID for illegal entrants that said specifically they can't vote as well, which seems like it would cut out a lot of issues with illegals having ID. I think the current "have large ghettos of people we can deport at will but mostly don't" is just about the worst possible world from a standpoint of civil rights, organized crime, and election fraud. It seems clear nobody has the balls to either deport such a large population or admit they won't, or to go through the expense of treating illegal entry like an actual crime. I expect that undocumented immigrants voting in national elections is pretty marginal in swing states that actually decide elections, and if it wasn't I'd expect "Blue Texas" to have actually gone somewhere.

Well, Portland is quiet tonight. The news reports some minor vandalism at City Hall but no serious violence, and the police-band and company internal comms aren't refuting that.

Things were apparently pretty bad on my day off, and there were some additional incidents last night as well, but not tonight.

They are at home preparing most likely for in case Trump comes back with a win
