It's 672' wide and the channel is ~78ft deep. That's not narrow "in certain spots".

Narrow would be the Panama canal. All of the American fast battleships were designed and built with a beam (108') and draft (39'6") restriction so that they would be able to fit through the locks

EDIT: 108ft and 39'6" was pushing it with mere inches to spare. 110ft or 39'9" meant that you got stuck and the US now has to take "the long way 'round" through the Drake Straight South of Chile and Argentina and close to Antartica or through the Arctic and around Canada to get a ship from the Atlantc to the Pacific (or vice-versa).

Oh, lovely. They've sent me a mo-ron.
Meanwhile ...

In '98? The Saudis said "fuck you, stop cheating" to the rest of OPEC by opening up their wells and flooding the oil market so badly that gas prices in the US briefly dropped to less than $0.65/gal to proove a point: "We can afford to do this, you can not."
And now there'll be countries that'll pick or not pick the price cap.
