They call themselves communist, and it's just a variation on Lenin's New Economic Policy.

Communists during the early USSR era were honestly ideological, while I'm pretty sure that the PRC engages in doublethink. Chinese CCP elites are too heavily integrated with big business/corporate elites.

By at the same time praising communism, Mao, Deng, Xi, peasants and corporations you show loyalty to the stability of China. There is no need to pressure Xi for more state-owned enterprises, that would be disloyal.*

Also, traditional Mandate of Heaven theory can taste excellent together with Democratic Centralism.

Western marxists that cannot understand rules of this game would need to be heavily reeducated in China.

*According to rules of Democratic Centralism you can of course politely suggest both more market-based and state-based economic policy if you enter the Party and during closed meetings. But then you should obey majority vote and current state ideology in your public activism.

2. China is fucked, their the single most over leveraged country in human history. They have the subprime crisis waiting in the wings on steriods waiting to rip apart their economy. This is a doomday weapon

To solve this issue you just print fresh money. Resources are taken from savers thanks to inflation and corporations retain liquidity.

Chinese people aren't stupid;) their savings totals peaked a few years back and any of them who can have been investing their money like crazy in overseas assets for years now. If that's the CCP's plan then they'd want to hurry... and have lots of ammunition handy when they do it.

Is it that time of the month? Property seizure to sustain the economy?

US Health & Human Services Secretary Azar visits Taiwan to meet with Taiwanese health officials in regards to the China Virus Pandemic.

Of course it turns out to be the highest level visit of a US official to Taiwan in decades... :sneaky:

AP News said:
Azar described “political bullying" over Taiwan's exclusion from the World Health Organization in 2018 that blocked a million-dollar Taiwanese contribution that would have helped combat an Ebola outbreak in Congo.

You know that part of Chinese tradition where a series of natural disasters and unrest signified that the present dynasty had lost the mandate of heaven?
As great as it would be for us. A Chinesecivol wsr will ge utterly horrific. Thier ancient ones rivaled the 30 years war for death rates. Now add whatever factions manage to get thier nukes. In a nation of 2 billion the death toll will be horrific on a massive scale.

Honestly, I'm not sure there would be anything left of China, once the smoke cleared. What remains of their culture will be what people take with them when they flee; although to be fair, after decades of CCP rule, the country has been almost completely rebuilt in their image. Comparatively little remains in China to connect the modern Chinese with their ancient heritage.

Zhang Zhan, a 37 year old former lawyer and citizen journalist who reported early on about the Wuflu outbreak has been detained by Chinese authorities since May.

She's apparently on a hunger strike and being kept confined in various restrained stress positions for long periods of time. Also according to her lawyer, a feeding tube has been forced into her system to counter the effects of the hunger strike.

In November she was formally charged with spreading false information and may face five years in prison.

Chinese Audiences are being hurt by South Korean celebrity insensitivity to their feelings about history and culture.

Some gems:

"South Korean singer Lee Hyori said she wanted to give herself an internationalized stage name 'Mao,'" the Global Times said in the article with the headline, "Why do Korean pop stars hurt the feelings of Chinese audiences with repeated insults against China?"

The show, which reportedly was boycotted by Chinese watchers, offended China because the flag of Taiwan was "put on equal footing" with the flag of China, the Global Times said.

"If places like Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are mentioned in the program, the subtitle groups will add 'China's' before these names," a Chinese source surnamed Zhou told the Global Times.

I wonder if "feelings" just a translation issue or a cultural one? The tendency for Chinese sources to talk about how their feelings are hurt comes across as quite weird to me but I realize it could just be cultural.

Can you imagine a western leader do so, say Trump publically complaining that a Mexican singer is hurting his feelings by naming his band Mar-A-Lago? He'd be a laughingstock, stoicism is too important a virtue in the west.

Maybe Canada can leverage the price of coal in exchange for freeing those hostages China still has.

A forty year old veteran of German diplomacy made his final appeal before Germany would end it's two year rotation on the UN Security Council in asking China to release the two Canadians they are holding hostage as a gesture for this Christmas season.

The Chinese diplomat in classic ChiCom professionalism replied "From the bottom of my heart, good riddance." He then accused Germany of poisoning the Councils work and hoped the Council would be in a better position next year with Germany gone.

Breakingviews - China Inc will recycle used white guys

China might recycle unwanted American white employees.

American company men may find a savior in China Inc. As corporations try to make their ranks more ethnically representative, many experienced – if white and older – males will find themselves without a job. Chinese companies, deterred from acquiring U.S. firms with valuable intellectual property, can recruit their discarded human capital instead.

Some of the largest U.S. companies are moving quickly to rebalance their headcount. At Apple, for example, women made up 38% of workers under 30 in 2018 versus just 31% four years earlier. The share of under-represented minorities in that group rose 10 percentage points to 35%. Meantime the employment-to-population ratio of white men fell from 76% in 1972 to 67% in 2018.

The Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and DB Weiss (boy did they ever drop off the face of the planet) were busy working with Netflix on adapting some best selling popular Chinese series of SciFi books called The Three Body Part Problem when tragedy struck production. Yoozoo Group is the Chinese company that owns the rights to the books and is their partner in this endeavour and they've recently hit a troublesome snag.

The Yoozoo Group Chairman, along with Benioff and Weiss among other executives from both sides of the pond, were apparently the victims of a poisoning on December 16th. Apparently the alledged poisoner was another Yoozoo Group Senior Executive, though investigations are still ongoing.
