At best, they're still as short-sighted as they were with Mao's policies; at worst, they know this is fucking evil and short-sighted but don't care.

Poorly-constructed apartment pods that will soon collapse under their own weight. Not that it matters; because I doubt most rural Chinese would even be able to afford the rubble, considering how inflated the real estate market in China has become.
Which is a problem from the perspective of a centralized authoritarian government; because any degree of self-sufficiency means they're not completely reliant on the state, and are therefore a threat to it.

One of the most frustrating things about geopolitics is that the only real penalties despotic states can face for ruling tyrannically is that other states may take advantage of their weakness. Which is quite impossible in the nuclear age, leading to perhaps the worst era of despotism in human history.

Well Murder Season (actual name they call it in China is actually a variation or play on words of knife) kicked off with a bang. Two mass murders on the same day on opposite ends of the country. The fucking Han are insane.
They're awfully fond of cleavers and knives and using them on children. You think school shootings are bad in the USA? The rates are higher in China, but they use knives and axes, and it's usually young adults to middle aged men and women doing it. Since people are sterilized after they reach their allowed number of children these attacks can wipe out an entire family's future. There's no safety net for old people, no children means they starve to death when they grow too old to work and the government kicks them out to house younger workers.

Well the ultranationalists are celebrating the bridge crash and mouthing off about Chinese hackers.
I'm pretty sure it's the ship owner itself that fucked up. This exact ship crashed into a dock in Belgium in 2016 for the exact same reason. So it was a known problem with the engine. Then this morning the news mentioned that apparently the tugboats guiding it out of dock in Baltimore left a few minutes early. A series of small things coming together to create a massive horror. The local police and Port Authorities deserve commendations they shut down the bridge within five minutes of the ship reporting the problem.
I can't imagine the horror those truckers felt hearing that call go out on VHF and trying to speed up off that bridge. Only for the deck to collapse beneath them.
