There's also a lot of civil unrest brewing in China under the surface that they're trying to keep quiet.

The average citizen is getting pissed off with the censorship, the tofu buildings and corruption, the "appearances above all" approach.

Knife crime is booming because people are snapping and stabbing random people on the street.

Out of curiosity, how fucked do you think the PRC is compared to the USSR?

When you put it that way, the similarities between Soviet stagnation in the Eighties and Red China's crumbling now are hard to miss. If anything, my sense is that even if they're more economically literate in the short term, the long term has the Chinese facing for a way rougher fall from grace than Russia in the Nineties.

Agreed. However, the problem is a sick tiger like China is likely going to lash out, and Xi's made plenty of noise about Taiwan and the Spratley Islands, and elsewhere. China can still do quite a bit of damage. Better to be ready for the real possibility of war, than not.

Or as the saying goes, "Si vis Pacem, Para Bellum."

I think Taiwan is investing a lot in Antiship mines, Antiship Missiles and expendable drones. If they can swarm the CCP Navy. Those ships will sink.

Prepared defense (preferably with the ability for offense) is like a fire extinguisher. Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

On another note, I've heard some speculating that Xi won't pull the trigger. A friendly reminder that it was predicted a certain other dictator wouldn't pull the trigger in a region called Ukraine, and we saw how that went. It was also hoped that the Middle East was finally going to calm down for a while...

I'm pretty sure that if their invaded Taiwan will hit three gorges.

That's china's obvious weak point, hit that and break it and you've just absolutely wreaked a huge portion of china.
It would take quite a few hits to take out a dam that large. To say nothing of the obvious issue with launching a strike looking to deliberately kill millions of civilians. Gaza is learning the dangers of using terror to cow a much larger and more powerful neighbor.

Considering how china treats their conquered....yeah their better off just taking as many people with them on the way down. As our eastern european posters will tell you communists do not do mercy.

I'm all for Taiwan's right to defend themselves. By all means, if they've the cash or trade sell them everything. But I certainly won't die for them. If they want to go down in a blaze of glory, they are welcome to do so.

Are they? Because it seems the powers that be are dead set on protecting the Palestinians from the consequences of their own actions. Honestly, I feel like there's going to be a point where the old, more brutal ways of doing things become the standard again.

Is the river it's on still drying up?

In regards to Three Gorges Dam, if you look at some other dams such as the Hoover Dam they're bow shaped to better handle the immense pressure of the water. The Three Gorges dam is literally built in a straight line, which back in 2019 was already showing signs of warping and deforming.

Any dam can be blown with enough explosives. The problem with Three Gorges is it's already showing signs of strain, hit it in enough of any identifiable weak points and that entire structure is going to go, assuming it doesn't eventually crack and give way first.

And before anyone screams "FAKE NEWS!!!"....well, the Chinese have actually admitted there is "some deformity, but it is perfectly safe."

The point is that if it goes to all out war? "Bad names" are going to be the least of anyone's worries.
All out war everything is free game for us

True. But I’m not so sure the current western leadership has the willingness to do it and risk being called Bad Names by the UN and the media.
If we are targeting the dam, it is because we took the gloves off and are willing to flood the vast majority of China in revenge for killing americans

They chose the cheapest materials using unskilled peasant workers, Organ Harvesting and Concentration . . . Excuse me. Re-education Camp slaves to build the dam. They chose a straight line against the recommendation of the European engineering firm they consulted. Because of cultural influences from Mao. Man Must Dominate and Reshape Nature. They took this to stupid extremes. A bowed dam was an admission of weakness, a straight dam a show of power. Chinese arrogance and superstitious nonsense all in one package of ultimate stupidity.

Nature always wins. Especially when you build on bedrock with areas of weakness, while stealing money by using cheaper filler and cheaper steel. They claim they solved the weak bedrock by injecting concrete in the cavities. Doesn't look like it with how badly warped its been

Which is going to be a huge shock to everyone who sees calling other people bad names as their path to ultimate power. Like a Yugioh protagonist when someone pulls a gun on him, instead of a deck of cards.
I remember story about some D&D fans who wear armours and had swords, but stil cast dices to check who win......
