'Barbecue' gang boss terrorising Haiti 'burns victims alive and feeds corpses to animals'

Haiti's most feared gang leader, known as 'Barbecue', has threatened to overthrow the country's prime minister amid a surge in gang violence that has thrown the Caribbean nation into turmoil.

A state of emergency was declared after thousands of "dangerous" prisoners broke out of Haiti's two biggest jails over the weekend. Gangs carried out a series of coordinated attacks, resulting in at least a dozen deaths.

These heavily armed groups are led by Haiti's most powerful gang boss, Jimmy Cherizier.

Cherizier, also known as "Barbecue", is a former officer in the Haitian National Police (HNP). He used to work for the Unit for the Maintenance of Order, who are called upon during times of unrest or protests.

All of this got instigated with the assassination of then-Haitian President Joevnel Moise 3 years ago.

I think the pervasive instability of Haiti goes back farther than that though it's a contributing factor. Due to the endemic corruption in Haiti, the political would be powermakers have been using the gangs as their personal militias in a country with a weak and corrupt law enforcement and no actual military. Politicians using Haiti's gangsters to enact or attempt to enact coups has been a thing since the the 1990's.

Ironically, despite bringing in a typhoid epidemic among the other standard issues of bringing third world peacekeepers to any country it seems, the UN peacekeepers that were sent to Haiti in the wake of the 2004 Coup actually helped curb the gang problem for a while, because the Prime Minister at the time took on a similar stance as the El Salvadors President Bukele, but obviously didn't have the law enforcement resources or standing army... or any traditions of either to depend on. So as soon as the political tides turned and the UN Peacekeepers withdrew, things fell apart even moreso again and politicians used gangs even more to angle for political power.

It'd be worth ignoring, like with so many other sore spots in the world, but Haiti is sharing a large border with a more stable and prosperous state in the Dominican Republic, and is a large drug transit point for shipping drugs to America and elsewhere, so it's not something that can just be ignored so to speak by everyone else in the world. The record of foreign interventions in the country tends to be fine in managing the violence... but collapse soonafter as said foreign intervention ends.

sharing a large border with a more stable and prosperous state in the Dominican Republic,
I’m vaguely surprised the Dominicans don’t just march in and annex Haiti. Bringing the entire island under their control would dramatically increase their power in the Caribbean.

And it’s not like the people would reject them. The moment Dominican troops start putting gang members up against the wall, is the moment Dominican rule is accepted.

Edit: Seriously, they have a proud historic tradition of beating the tar out of Haiti. Their country begins in a war of independence against Haiti as I understand it.

Let's not forget about the 1986 Revolution which ousted the Duvalier family.

Dominicans know better than to go to that shithole

The moment Dominican troops start putting gang members up against the wall, is the moment Dominican rule is accepted.

You have rosy view of humanity in general and Haitians specifically. The moment Domincans start executing the scumbags, the same people who cried for somebody to do something, will cry that they are murdering gewd keedz who dindu nuffin.
Let Haiti devour itself, maybe they will learn the basics of civilization someday.

They already did that. It didn't work. I wonder if the only way it would work is if they go full genocide on the Haitians, which would not be allowed for various obvious reasons(... at least, for now).

What exactly is Haiti's issue that prevents a functioning society? I mean that in a serious way as my knowledge of the region isn't as good as I'd like it to be. All I am aware of is they got fleeced by the French and keep being hit by Earthquakes.
