I honestly don't know if this is the kind of place where a Buffy fanfic is going to flourish, especially one based around OCs (though the points where I indulged my inner militaria-geek might do me some favours), but the fact that fellow alumni of the XanderZone mailing list have posted repeatedly in this thread does give me a certain degree of hope. Please, if you like the fic or something it does, if you have questions about the worldbuilding or my 'variant assumptions' about canon, please feel free to ask any questions in that thread, and I'll answer as best spoilers will permit!

Matryoshka was my signature piece, though in all honesty I functionally abandoned it years ago and am reworking the whole concept (hence Valhalla Can Wait and the series it's meant to start).
FWIW, with the XanderZone gone Greywizard seems to have made Twisting the Hellmouth his 'new' home for Buffy fics.

He's caught in a Time Braid with interlacing cycles. He has to find a way out of it but stay within the rules. What are the rules? No idea. He learns them the hard way. Everything is done the hard way and painful way for Xander.

So, it's been about 22 years since Buffy first aired. Big cultural phenomenon, or so it would seem. I didn't really start watching the show until much later as I was over in Europe for most of the 90's. That said, I will make this a wide open debate/discussion/retrospect, etc. What did people think of the show? What could have been done better? What stood out? What moments were great, and what absolutely sucked? What about the characters? And what about the Buffy "verse" in itself...? And how has the show aged 20 years later...?

Again, open floor discussion, and I'll pipe in my opinions as well.

I'll be honest, while I don't hate Xander, I have come to hate all the Xanderwank fics I see to the point that I get very leery about reading any fics that focus on him.

One of the sad realities of having a shitty character arc that is unfulfilling, but a lot of fans who are inspiring writers. Cloe from Smallsville got a similar treatment until Alison Mack turned became a very public sexual predator.

for the record I agree with you. Which is why I treasure the really good ones that I do find.
