Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a discussion thread and retrospective

Can we have a TL: DW? I dont feel like watching it all

James Marsters essentially says that Joss is intense. That Spike was supposed to die but due to fab reaction he was forced to keep him.

Vampires weren't supposed to be sexy and Hot, but an evil to be overcome. James Marsters and David Boreanaz sorta wrecked that by just being awesome.

Well, to be fair he doesn't really dish any new dirt on Joss Whedon in the interview. He does confirm though that Whedon got nasty and rather physical with him over the whole idea of Spike becoming a "hero" rather than a villain to get smoked. I don't know if Marsters had any hand in that though, it sounds from what I've heard more like Marti Noxon's idea when she took over in Season 5 or 6...which is telling since that's when it felt the series began it's downward slide.

If I can make a bold claim? The fanbase is partly to blame for that. Of course Marters and Boreanaz were awesome...and the fanbase, in particular the female side just got starry-eyed over them. Now, jeez, what to do? Matters did sort of take a life of their own there.

Hell, the character of Oz was supposed to get killed originally by Angelus, and Jenny Calendar was supposed to hang around a bit longer, supposedly. But that got changed when Oz, again, got popular with the female fanbase. Notice a trend? And so Jenny got killed off instead...

The fan base isn't partially responsible. They're very much almost solely responsible for this.

And speaking of Slayer's equipment....can anyone explain to me the obscene lack of any modern firearms in the show? The proper and effective use of firearms with the right ammunition could be such a useful card, if not a game changer for Slayers and their Watchers....and yet it's 1998, and here they are using medieval weapon mockups. 😦
Becouse a lot of the monsters are not effected by bullets and even the Sunnydale PD would have notice automatic gunfire every night and the slayer is even more vulnerable to bullets than the enemy so best not to point that out by using guns first.

Doesn't explain the lack of modern weapons. A modern crossbow or a modern compound bow? Equip them with cold iron or silver heads and most things would not enjoy what happened next. I'm sure the council has at least one blacksmith that could cold forge some iron arrowheads.

Darla pulled pistols on Buffy and specifically mocked her for using a crossbow, and the Council's tactical teams were equipped with firearms. Given the way the Council treats Slayers, it's heavily implied that the lack of access to modern weapons is one of the ways they ensure that Slayers have little to no chance of long term survival.

Edit: In other words, yes, it would be an incredibly useful card. The Council is shown to have firearms for their non-Slayer field personnel and it is outright canon that the Council intentionally undermines the Slayers in order to ensure that Slayers never become experienced adults who could be more independent of the Watchers. Intentionally withholding access to anti-vamp firearms would completely fit that strategy and agenda.

The guns work fine on Demons. It's the ammunition that doesn't.

Also on a meta level, this was a TV show aimed at teens. The network censors would never allow the heroes to use guns for that timeslot/age group. The writers had to come up with some plot excuse to ensure said main characters could never get guns.

I think you could certainly handwave that the physical enhancements and fighting instincts that come with being the Slayer lend themselves best to hand-to-hand combat with stakes and primitive weapons, whereas modern weapons are just as out-of-context for the Slayer as they were for demons. Buffy did use that rocket launcher one time, but she didn't appear to be using it with any special competence and it was a point-and-shoot shot against a stationary target at point-blank range.

Xander had to teach her how to use it. Drawing on the memories of the Soldier.

In summary, Whedon broke his silence in regards to the accusations, and it's not pretty. The New York Vulture did an interview that's been getting dissected. And he had some not so pleasant things to say.

It's worth pointing out that Whedon's own statements do not actually deny that these things happened. He's just making very weak downplaying statements -- "I don't remember that happening.", "That doesn't sound like me.", "I was having affairs, but I don't *think* I had those particular affairs."

Yes. As I said, he's full of it.
