Buffy the Vampire Slayer, a discussion thread and retrospective

Jesus, I feel bad for Charisma Carpenter....and whoever else had to work for Joss Whedon at this point, including Nicholas Brendon. If it's this bad I wonder how it was for Sarah Michelle Gellar.

Yeah...Joss Whedon is an abusive sociopath and utter jackass. This is gonna tarnish the whole BTVS brand forever if it wasn't tarnished already...sadly.

It already has. when one learns of Joss's 'kinks' One takes a hard look at BTVS and see it as simply Joss's fetish onscreen. And that makes a lot of people upset.

When I go back and watch it now, after knowing all this....sadly, yes, it does. I still have plans for the Buffy fanfic though and I am to start it this year. But knowing all this? I may be addressing some issues that need to be addressed in the fanfic, like the lack of father figures for one thing and how not all men are either useless or incompetent jackasses.

Same with Winter 7.

So, hopefully on a lighter note:

1. Definite institutional inertia, the Watcher's Council was definitely a "tied to the horse and buggy" kind of group...which makes you wonder how the hell they lasted this long. But hey, Whedon-logic.

2. That would make sense, again, Evil Patriarchy (TM).

I think it's less "Evil Patriarchy" and more "of course the rich, centuries old, semi-hereditary shadow organization with no accountability is corrupt".

4. Firearms are tools. They don't necessarily make the Slayer better, but it is an additional useful card in the deck she can use to her benefit. Plus....MORE DAKKA. :p

The modern day Watcher's Council values the Slayer being *under their control* a lot more than minor performance improvements. Otherwise they'd have those commando teams backing up the Slayer as opposed to apparently sitting around twiddling their thumbs.

5. But you WANT to give vampires good ideas, if not horrific ideas, admit it.:ROFLMAO: But it's inevitable....sooner or later, one of the undead will have a lightbulb go off in his/her head.

Darla already did all the way back in the first or second season, IIRC?

6. Do Slayer's skills apply to firearms? Well....that IS something to ponder and discuss, isn't it?

Given how literally primal the Slayer is, I'm pretty sure the Slayer's instinctive skillset applies only to primitive weapons, and primarily melee weapons at that.

Unlikely. Remember, the slayer is old. Pre-crossbow old. Pre-sword old. Yet Slayer skills work on those.

Also, we have Buffy correctly using a rocket launcher on her first try.

For what it's worth SMG released a statement....but then so are some other costars, Amber Benson and Michelle Trachtenberg among them.

Whedon's career is likely finished at this point.
Ya know, I'm no fan of Whedon's but that's extremely weak and looks like a hit piece to me. Abused his power? How? Weaponized your womanhood against you? What does that even mean? What are the specifics? Oh, he asked a pregnant actress if she was going to keep the child or not? That's kinda the thing a director needs to know so he can plan the future of the show to include the pregnancy or not. The rest, I get deeply suspicious when I don't see specifics and just vague accusations of "he made a hostile work environment."

It's my estimation that every man ever got a statue made of him was one kind of son of a bitch or another.

Buffy talked a lot about family, but Angel was the show that actually felt like one.

She goes into some detail. For instance her agent tried to call and tell him she was pregnant. He ignored those calls and then tried to get her to abort her baby.
He called her fat at 126 pounds. That’s not fat and would be easy to cover up.
The tattoo was one thing I kind of see his point on but that can be covered with makeup. And it’s something I’d expect Cordy to get in universe. If I was in buffy verse. I’d get a cross tattoo and always have one around my neck.

I think her tried to fuck her and she shut him down early. Or he played SMG to try and get in her pants.

I don't disagree, let me note that I routinely post against my own opinion if the evidence isn't there. Those facts are true and damning. The thing is that those facts, such as ignoring her agent or calling her fat weren't in the article I was critiquing.

Also Hollywood fat is everybody else's skinny but that's neither here nor there.

I'm no Whedon fan and I was saying that, specific, piece did not bring the evidence the way it should and looked like a hit piece with fluffy meaningless accusations like "weaponized womanhood" instead of what could have been more concrete issues like "ignored agent's calls." It makes me suspicious of the article when they could have done so much better so easily.

That's because the article was a followup on the accusations, saying that other cast members were supporting her. The original accusation is here:
More (and brand new info) on whedon being a dick:

After the article, the actor for Dawn made another tweet that said that Whedon was never allowed in the room alone with her.

Yeah I saw that. If Michelle was my daughter. I’d went down there and beat the living shit out of him. Hell if Charisma was I’d do the same
I normally need more than talk but this all backs his well known fetishes, what his wife said, rumors from strong sources, multiple lead/supporting actresses and actors on the show and other projects.

Just more reason to keep your family the hell away from Hollywood.

The BTVS fandom has apparently been at odds with itself, from what little I saw anyway, over the apparent revelations. Some say the entire brand is irreparably damaged, others (quite a few) are in denial and say it's all BS, and then some just say it's okay to enjoy the show, just not like Whedon, etc. etc. Only problem is Whedon leaves quite the legacy, love it or hate it, or both.

Not sure what to think really. For the record, I utterly DESPISE every damn aspect of cancel culture as it is not a culture, it is a new fucked up form of the Chinese Cultural Revolution that seeks to destroy everything in the form of ultimate control of thought and compliance to the will of the State. On the other hand? If they start condemning a show that was held up as a cultural phenomenon and a feminist icon for decades? I might laugh....in a sad, bitter way. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

Really makes you wonder what the hell was going on with some of the episodes of Buffy, especially the later seasons where Spike raped Buffy, but we're supposed to be okay with that somehow? Something happened after Season 5 with that show, everyone knew it, but something was wrong. Sadly, it seems there were problems long before Season 5.

It's not just Buffy. Revelations about other shows from the era like 7th Heaven, Charmed, One Tree Hill, etc. have all come out. Lot of evil shit going on behind the scenes. And it's hard to watch those shows now, knowing a little of what might have been actually going on in the background.

Before the MeToo movement got used as a political weapon, there were valid reasons for it, and still are to an extent. Hollywood is just full of sick twisted degenerate predators. There all these beautiful women and young kids getting sent to this merciless fucking up machine called Hollywood to get used up, churned up and spit out just to satisfy the horrific urges of the worst aspects of humanity. If I had a daughter? I'd tell her to stick with Broadway and theater, if it's any better.

In the end, hopefully some good comes out of all this for the actors and actresses who were put up with all this.
