• The Sietch will shortly be brought offline for HPG systems maintenance. Please remain calm and do not start any interstellar wars while ComStar is busy. May the Peace of Blake be with you. Precentor Dune
  • Hey (name)! This is a general announcement to all of our members that we have a growing Alternate History and Creative Writing section that is increasingly seeing new content. If you haven't taken a look lately, please do so and perhaps leave a comment or reaction if you read something you like! Let's support our writers!
  • For those of you who would like to support the Sietch financially, subscriptions are BACK. Simply click on Account Upgrades and you will be able to upgrade your account!
  • The 'Comrade' title is now available in a fetching communist red for purchase by all of you capitalists who survived the Sietch gulag during the people's revolution. And in the spirit of all communists everywhere, it was broken until the capitalist pig dogs fixed it. ;)
  • Your beloved Boot here with a confession. The Boot tangled its laces and failed to properly set up the new Comrade user title. Thanks to the kind intercession of Emperor Tippy this failure has been corrected and the new user title is now actually on sale to everybody.

So, just how bad is the ‘Washington DC becomes a state’ gonna be for us if it passes?

It's +2 dem senators. The Senate is usually pretty close, often by that margin, so it's fairly significant in terms of senate control. I'm pretty sure the margin for filibuster would change to either 61 or 62 as well, so it's either net +1 dem senator or +0 dem senators with regard to fillibuster.

I think it's just +1 dem rep so that matters less but is still a factor.

Looking at 107th congress on, it would make it so that the dems would have controlled the senate rather than Republicans between Jan 20, 2001 and May 24, 2001, would have made 2003-2005 a tie (but with Cheney breaking the tie), 2017-2019 a tie (with Pence breaking the tie) and prevented the current senate from being a tie (with Harris breaking the tie). Maybe most significantly, if the threshold for filibuster were 61, then the dems probably would have been over the threshold for 2009-2011, rather than only being past it for a brief period.

Isn't Washington DC like just the city though? Whats the requirement to be called a state anyway? Don't know much about this stuff but wasn't it just some spot in Maryland that got named the Capital?

Also if DC becomes a State does that mean the US will have a Capital State? Or will you cordon off a bit of it as a Washigton City and call that the Capital? Also would Washington State have to change its name or does it have dibs? Very confusing, like if you guys were just going to have the capital be in a state why not just merge it back to Maryland or wherever it is.

See none of those details matter. All that matters is those sweet extra senate seats. So no one pushing for it really cares how the details are worked out. Honestly keeping it a work in progress that they need to keep doing studies and committees on works just fine as long as they can vote for senators.

No, those details have been discussed. Basically, the Capitol Mall and the immediate area around it wouldn't be part of the state of DC and would remain under the Federal government's jurisdiction, while the rest of the area would become part of the state. This would technically leave the few people who do live in that area disenfranchised, but whatever.

Well I suppose it would be appropriate for the US to have a Capital Mall. Even if it did come after the idea of malls kinda started fizzling out.
