......"I was such an idiot for not realizing what Jae-gyu was really planning. I should've stopped him."
-Kim Gye-won
Former Chief Secretary to ROK President Park Chung-hee
27 October 1979
Inside Gye-won's office on the Blue House Grounds
During private conversation with former ROK Prime Minister Kim Jong-pil.
During the evening banquet at the KCIA Safehouse, the majority volatile and hot-tempered issues being discussed included the Busan demonstrations and opposition leader Kim Young-sam were the main focus with President Park and Chief Bodyguard Cha both taking strong hardlines, while KCIA Director Kim offered moderate measures while Chief Secretary Kim Gye-won was trying the best he could in steering the discussion to small talk.
President Park continued his scolding of Kim for not being more repressive enough in dealing with protesters and Kim Young-sam, whom Park wanted arrested. Cha continued bringing up the KCIA's inability of not being able to end the ongoing protests and suggested both opposition lawmakers and demonstrators be mowed down with heavy military tanks. Already aggrevated, KCIA Director Kim stepped out of the dining room to do the following: going back to his office, and getting his pistol, which was a German Walter PPK .32, putting it in his pants pocket; then going outside to meet with close KCIA subordinates: former ROK Marine Corps Colonel and KCIA Chief Agent Park Seon-ho, and ROK Army Colonel and Director Kim's secretary Park Heung-ju. KCIA Director Kim said to both of them: "The Chief of Staff and Deputy Director are here as well. Today is the day that we take back the Republic of Korea once and for all!" When asked if President Park was going to be killed as a result of these plans, Kim coldly replied "Yes." This shocked both Seon-ho and Heung-ju as what they were doing would have ugly ramifications for not only the Republic of Korea, but the entire world going forward.
After reentering the dining room, KCIA Director Kim continued to get scolded even further by President Park, who said "Jae-gyu, my disappointment in you grows day by day. You are just utterly disappointing in your job...... How can you do nothing to quell the protests in Busan and Masan, with all the money I have given you? What excuse do you have this time?"
Eagerly joining in the fun to launch more insulting potshots at KCIA Director Kim, Chief Bodyguard Cha interrupted the President: "The situation has gotten worse due to the government's inaction."
President Park continued: "I should've arrested Kim Young-sam, but I didn't because Lew Hyuck-in (the first presidential political affairs secretary) advised me against it. But that has just increased the chaos." Jae-gyu objected: "The people believe Kim was punished sufficiently by being expelled from the Assembly (in reference to the ROK National Assembly)." Park of course, strongly disagreed with his longtime confidant: "The KCIA needs to be more threatening. It needs to be moving faster to dealing with irregularities by opposition lawmakers when it has evidence, instead of standing idly by."
Things took a more uglier turn during the dinner banquet as KCIA Director Kim raised his voice: "Politics should recognize each side as a rightful partner, and you should be willing to give your partner some incentive in return for having your demands answered. Unless you promise them that incentive, the opposition will never answer your call." Chief Bodyguard Cha dismissed this with more aggressive language: "None of those fools really meant to give up their seats. I will stop them with tanks if I have to. I don't care if they're lawmakers."
And at 7:45 PM KST, this was the moment when KCIA Director Kim already enraged, stood up from the dining table and shouted profanities with the German Walter PPK.32 in his right hand. "You bastard, go to Hell," he screamed by shooting Cha in the right elbow: BANG! Cha yelled at Jae-gyu: "Jae-gyu! What the fuck was that for?" President Park snapped at KCIA Director Kim scolding him again: "What are you doing? Stop this bullshit now at once!"
At this time, over in the waiting room, two bodyguards from the ROK Presidential Security Service, heard the gunshot but were prevented from leaving when Park Seon-ho pulled out his gun and held them at gunpoint, "Don't even think about pulling out your guns, get your hands up right now at this instant!" Seon-ho snapped. For Seon-ho, he was hoping to prevent further bloodshed since one of the bodyguards was one of his closest friends during their times in the Republic of Korea Marine Corps. Unfortunately, when one of the bodyguards tried pulling out his gun to shoot, Seon-ho opened fire: BANG! The other bodyguard was shocked, "What in the Hell are you doing Seon-ho? Please stop this right now!" and when he attempted to pull out his gun in an attempt of stopping him, Seon-ho opened fire killing his best friend too: BANG!
Over at the dining room, KCIA Director Kim then turned to President Park and unloaded more profanities at him. "You too can go to Hell!" he screamed and opened fire BANG!, hitting the President in the right chest. This horrified Chief Secretary Kim Gye-won including Sim Soo-bong and Shin Jae-soon, both of the girls screamed in absolute horror watching the KCIA Director shooting both the Chief Presidential Bodyguard and the President in front of them.
Suddenly across the other side of the KCIA Safehouse Compound Grounds, Park Heung-ju including fellow co-conspirators: Yoo Seong-ok; Lee Ki-ju; Kim Tae-won and Seo Young-jun stormed outside the kitchen area and opened fire via machine-gun fire killing the remaining presidential bodyguards, who were in the kitchen eating food including some of the cooks, who were collateral damage in this bloodthirsty carnage.
Going back to the dining room, KCIA Director Kim walked toward Chief Bodyguard Cha in an attempt to shoot him again, who begged "What are you doing? STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT!" as Kim's German Walter PPK.32 jammed as he tried pulling the trigger, resulting in Cha screaming like a weakling coward running to the bathroom. What happened next was when the lights inside went out, which further enraged Kim, "Turn on the fucking lights!" as he stormed out of the dining room.
Across the KCIA Safehouse Compound Grounds, Army Chief of Staff General Jeong Seung-hwa and KCIA Deputy Director Kim Jeong-seol heard the machine guns being fired, which alarmed Jeong who was eating some salad, "Now what in the world was that? Loud machine gun fire?" Jeong-seol told him, "Do you think this is some of a coup attempt?" Seung-hwa wanted Jeong-seol to check out why were those machine guns firing and see what's going on, Jeong-seol obliged by stepping out to see what all of the fuss was about.
Over inside the dining room, Chief Secretary Kim Gye-won, who was also a former ROK Army four-star General, crawled out underneath the table, saying "I guess the President is ok". This enraged Jae-soon, "Get back here and help us save the President." Gye-won told them "You're both good girls, stay calm, I will be right back." But obviously, he never came back to the room and escaped because he was frightened for his life and hid somewhere else outside near the dining room not far away. While that was going on, KCIA Director Kim demanded that he needed a gun, when Seon-ho replied "Sir, here's another gun", after trading guns, Seon-ho knew what was going to happen next and ran to another part of the Safehouse.
Back in the dining room, Chief Bodyguard Cha assuming the ghost was clear, ran over to the bleeding President, as both young women were trying to save his life: "Mr. President, are you doing ok sir?" Park garbled some words and coughed. Hearing some loud footsteps, Chief Bodyguard Cha stupidly tried to ask for more bodyguards to get them out of the Safehouse and when he stupidly opened the door, he was face-to-face with KCIA Director Kim, who was holding a Smith and Wesson .38 revolver. Kim aimed at Cha and opened fire: BANG, causing the Chief Bodyguard to fall to the floor. He then came back to President Park, who was bleeding and sitting in his chair, which caused both Sim Soo-bong and Shin Jae-soon to scream and run for their lives.
KCIA Director Kim aimed his Smith and Wesson at President Park's head and opened fire for the final time: BANG!
With that, Park Chung-hee, the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th President of the Republic of Korea was assassinated!
