Roland the Giant was a Paladin of Charlemagne (Conqueror of what eventually became France and Germany) who allegedly wielded the unbreakable, ever sharp, sword Durandal, gifted to him by the Madonna (IIRC). The knight was one of the overseers in the region that would become France. He fought a rearguard action and died valiantly against the Iberian Muslims Christian Basques in like 778, throwing his sword high into a cliff to keep it out of their hands. He also had a horn horn that he blew so hard it split (like Boromir) and when his body was recovered by friendly forces it was found with him (like Boromir).

There's actually a sword embedded in the cliff in the right place, which is interesting. But, uh, it's all rusty and shit. Very much no longer sharp.

Roland the Giant is basically the protype, or perhaps the first after Charlemagne, French hero, and one that actually existed. (Unlike Lancelot)

Edit: Got who killed Roland mixed up. Muslims were invading and conquering much of Iberia at the time. Sorry.

Hadn't seen this one when it was posted.

While not as venerated(or even remembered) as Vercingetorix, Brennus(chieftain of the Senones, the Gaul who sacked and captured Rome in 390 BC) also got honored a few times - they even named a battleship after him in the 1880s.

Nobody knows.
Always fun to place bets
Some are betting on a restored monarchy (via Bonaparte), but I severely doubt that; most likely it's going to be another Republic revision.

Knowing France's history, it's due for another French Republic incarnation soon. shrug

Some leftard fuck spouting "end of democracy! we are in a presidential monarchy!"?
Well, my barely housetrained cat has a higher IQ than he has, as she knows that the V Republic has been a presidential monarchy by design and since establishment. Because, you know, De Gaulle had an ego to match Tywin Lanister's and Republics nos. 3 and 4 were barely functional.

Sadly true, there would be no Return of the King now,at least not for now.
But,when their pension system fall in few years,it could happen. That,or few mini caliphates fighting each other.
