Netflix Post-Roman Mob Whining About African Queen Cleopatra Series

By the Egyptians, even. They did the same back when Hollywood cast Lou Gossett Jr. as Anwar Sadat in the 80s. Guess the Egyptian people knew where this nonsense was leading to even back then.
wait, you meant the netflix thing?
I thought he was said that bud light company is being sued for advertising to underaged

the lawyer is pursing the case in Egyptian courts i dont exactly know how they work bu here’s some quotes from the lawyer taking from this article

Al-Semary claimed that the Netflix documentary distorts Egypt's history in favor of promoting Afrocentrism. He also complained of warped standards, stating in the lawsuit that "most of what Netflix platform displays do not conform to Islamic and societal values and principles, especially Egyptian ones."

He added that "in order to preserve the Egyptian national and cultural identity among Egyptians all over the world, there must be pride in the makings of such work."

so I’m not sure how much Egyptian courts are Islamic ones but if he gets the right judge I could see Netflix just being banned outright because it very much isn’t conforming to Islamic values

Yup, what I said.

No they can't. Literal lack of standing. The same way current day Mongolians could not sue for the Genghis Khan movies staring John Wayne.
Look above, pro tip different countries have different standards, like how China banned time travel movies that feature prominent Chinese historical figures and how Russia banned Isekais from being shown to children.

Um I hate to break it too you but Western Media is not exactly big in the Islamic world. I was deployed to the Middle East and saw only a few conservative Japanese Animes and a shit ton of Islamic programing. No Western Media. So even if he wins in a Muslim court it means jack and shit to Netflix bottom line. And I say this as someone who does not like Netflix. I am just a realist.

I don't know, I think a country should be able to sue for having their history misrepresented like that.
One agency or institution of the country can sue a company or companies in that country.

Just like the IRS can't just but you in jail but has to prove you are guilty, in a court of law.

Egypt has a population of 100 million, that is a sizable potential audience.

And I am sure lots of the tourists watch it, too.

You have never been to the Middle East have you. I have been to one of the most tourist parts of the Middle East Dubai. And you know what. No Western Movies like we have over here. All you get is bland heavily censored western shows. And the local Arab media. Netflix would not waste the time on a market they don't make money in.

Going to have to second Sailor on this one, I know people who have been to the middle east and they all report the same thing.

You're confusing what is allowed on cable with what people watch in their homes. This would be bad reasoning in the US, but its even worse in restrictive countries like the middle east.

Google search for it shows a questionable source that claims approx. 250K subscribers in UAE and 100K in Kuwait.

This is probably an underestimation though - unsurprisingly, countries like UAE and Kuwait have some of the highest rates of VPN usage in the world.

I don't buy it one bit. VPN or not people in the Middle East still have bank accounts in the region. And all transactions are monitored by those governements.

I lived in Dubai for 11 years, and this completely contradicts what I saw. Since it was more than a decade ago, things might have drastically changed, but I've heard nothing of the sort from people still out in that area.

While the state-run sole internet provider would try to censor out religious sites they didn't like and porn, every media shop and theater was chock full of western media. It was more common than Islamic-world media.

That isn't to say that they don't have the ability to try to block Netflix or similar, but they absolutely consume western media, and in large quantities too.

Of course, Dubai also has a minority population of local citizens, so that doesn't mean much either.

the middle east is a big place and what is true in dubai isn't nessarly true in Egypt. Just because a place is a part of the same civilization it doens't mean different countries are not going to have different ways of doing things.

I was in Dubai 30 years ago. The only western media we got was BBC. And that was censored.
