Things get worse in The Southwest

I had no idea that CA had an official State Bird 😕

Literally every state has an official state bird, an official state tree, and an official state animal which is usually not the same as the state bird. Forty-eight also have a state insect, and some states go truly nuts with designating official state symbols in every possible category of being.

Several states have two state fish, one fresh-water and one salt-water.

I reiterate that those who claim California refuses desalination because they "don't want a solution!!!!" are ignoring the very real downsides of desalination, first and foremost that it COSTS TRIPLE THE CURRENT MARKET RATE for water, and thus is not economically viable unless massively subsidized.

And also ignoring the fact that despite the high cost, California has more desalination plants, including new state of the art ones, that the rest of the damn country put together.

The economic cost is exactly the main issue, yes, and why I lobby for nuclear as the solution. Hell, if people are too skittish or cost afraid to get MSRs in action, just get some High Temperature Gas Cooled reactors from the UK; their high operating temperatures makes desalination affordable too.

Most state have no use for desalination as they are inland or have plenty of water already. The Southwest suffers from this problem because it is largely desert. No one needs desalination in Illinois, for example, which is why most of the plants are out in California.

Fourteen states have an official state dinosaur, and Washington was going to appoint one except they decided they had more important things to do when COVID hit.
BTW - I've seen a fanfic claiming that the "Official State Sport" of Maryland is jousting. True?

Also, I was thinking more aloing the lines of e.g. Minesotta with a Direwolf and "Winter is Coming" as motto, or California with a Shapeshifter and "Defund the Witchers!".

the thing is we subisdize so much stuff that simply does not work or is directly harmful to society and there is a ton of corruption. Spending money to have drinkable water by contrast at least gets us fucking water.

Yes, it actually is; this was actually passed into state law in 1962, and made Maryland the first state to have an official sport. Apparently, jousting tournaments in Maryland date back to the colonial era, and became increasingly popular post Civil War.

My significant other is from Minnesota, so I can assure you with confidence that Minnesota is not and never will be even remotely cool enough to do such a thing.

Start shoving funding into Nuclear energy research, get Molten Salt Reactors and/or Fusion figured out ASAP. The high temperatures of both make desalination imminently affordable, while USG should leverage subsidies to the Agri-Industry to change practices; farming in California can and should be made more efficient with regards to water usage. Between the two, you could eliminate California's draws on the Colorado and other sources; if it's economic, you can also see about pipping water from the Pacific to Arizona. Supposedly, if diversions from the Truckee River are ended, Lake Lahontan might make a comeback too which would help Nevada.
Or, just write off California as a loss and cut off its out of state water supplies before building the Great Wall of Trump.
Redirect the water to different states, instead.

Several states have two state fish, one fresh-water and one salt-water.
And how many of those are landlocked without any major freshwater fisheries?

If California was an independant country it would, by itself, have a larger economy than every country except for the rest of the US, China, Japan, and Germany.

Indianapolis, where I live, doesn't even have a navagable river. It's also sbout half the size of Belgium in terms of area when you include suburbs.
