Depending on where it is built, yes. In most of Europe, for example, the total environmental cost of manufacturing, shipping, and installing those solar panels exceeds the expected carbon reduction from their lifespan compared to fossil fuels (although I'm not positive about coal specifically, I know NatGas is cleaner total life cycle than most EU solar).

When you factor in all of the ancillary costs, the situation gets even more pro fossil fuel.

I mean electric cars? They are, net, dirtier than modern internal combustion cars. That one is somewhat a side effect of the fact that auto ICE's are incredibly clean and efficient while most grid electric generation is actually less environmentally friendly.

Solar and Wind are also strongly environment dependent, which means you need an alternative energy source so that the grid has consistent, reliable, power. Storing electricity directly at scale is horrifically inefficient. But what this means is that in addition to the environmental cost of the solar panels you also need to include the environmental cost of all the additional ancillary infrastructure needed to make it a viable power source.

In some places Solar and Wind make a great deal of sense (Texas for example, likely to be the first state to really go green for its power generation), in other places (most of Europe for example) Solar & Wind are farcical and it would be better for the environment to just burn the trillions in cash spent trying to make Europe green.

EDIT: And we always forget geothermal, which is kinda sad because that really is an area that should see a ton more investment. Consistent, reliable, safe, clean, power. Of course, the viable geographies are relatively limited. And no one wants to pour tons of money into trying to make geo more cost effective/more broadly viable for some inane reason that I've never figured out beyond "it's not as sexy".
Biodiesel and biogas is the future.

minimal disruption to existing systems.

100% biodegradable and renewable.

Its Russia. Its silovki. Casual cussing is... not out of question.
Dude, it really, really doesn't look authentic. Did you ever work in a corporation, or served in the military or any other large organization where emails are passed? Memos never look anything like whatever this thing is supposed to be.

Edit: don't get me wrong, the conclusions might well be spot on, but it's definitely not an authentic document.

Its not a memo that was leaked, not sure where you got the idea that it was.

If real, it's more like a frustrated/annoyed FSB guy venting/ranting on 4chan about how fucked up the situation is, not leaking an official memo.

For western ones, absolutely. For eastern...
Christo Grozev, who works for the Netherlands-based investigative journalism group Bellingcat, tweeted that he showed the letter to two FSB contacts, one current and one former employee.

They had no doubt that the author was a colleague, he said.

Yet Rebekah Koffler, a former Defense Intelligence Agency officer and author of 'Putin's Playbook: Russia's Secret Plan to Defeat America', told Fox News she was suspicious of its authenticity.

If that was all there was to it, he would have invaded immediately after the failed withdraw from Afghanistan. A lot of things are going on behind the scenes we're not aware of, and I suspect the Biden administration had a hand in somehow provoking Putin into acting now, instead of waiting a few more years.

Not provoking, making deal.Biden need discration from his fuckups,Putin clearly do not need that many paras and generals.
Logical for KGB,only army could made putch and save Russia from KGB now.Not possible now, when they are dying.

Bellingcat does some pretty great work, but their participants are all staunchly anti-Putin. You can trust their actual reports, but what they post on their personal twitter accounts should be approached a bit more skeptically. These people all want Putin to fail.

Anyway, conveniently for all of us, the actual purported leak contains concrete predictions about what its author is certain(!) will happen. It's dated 'March 4th', and the author claims that within one to two weeks, Russia will see economic collapse, food problems and unrest that will make Russian look back "fondly" on the "hungry '90s".

Let's give him until March 18th, huh? If the scenario he predicts hasn't unfolded by then, his two week window has passed, and we know that he wasn't accurate. Regardless of his actual identity, if his predictions don't come true, his intel is worthless. If by the 18th, Russia has devolved into general riots, violence and anarchy, we can safely assume this guy was a real insider. If not, and if nothing really close like that looks to be happening, we can safely dimiss this entire "leak".

Honestly sounds like wishful thinking. Isn't Rússia mostly self sufficient in food? And with these embargoes they have a bunch of oil and derivates backed up so they won't run out of Gas anytime soom.

Modern technology doesn't really work without access to some special materials, some of which are found only in specific places in the world. Maybe Russia can survive a complete and total embargo, but not as anything close to a modern, powerful, technological nation. It will become something much closer to the worst of the shittiest African countries.

Long as it has China as a trade buffer they won't be completely cut off.

I think it is time to ramp up this technology.

We have the technology time to go whole hog on Gas from Coal.

Coal liquefaction has been a thing since the 1920's, But if everyone wants to be "green" we should just build nuclear power plants maybe of the molten salt variety and then just build the infrastructure for hydrogen.

The Vocal Minority want to be Green. If everybody did. SUV sales would not have been so high as it is.

Biodiesel and biogas is the future.

Given the amount of land you would need to replace oil with biodiesel, you would need to seriously reduce the population to make it work.

It's still very wasteful process, even with all the technological advances. Honestly, burning the coal in power plants and using the electricity to power the vehicles would be more energy efficient.

Both solutions can be supplemental, but I think the biggest portion of the solution should be nuclear technology. Not that it is politically feasible.

Ironically its the "green energy" lobby that fights hardest against nuclear now, Probably because they know their shit is snake oil and nuclear is an actual solution.
If the problem gets solved, you can't start charities to rip off or get awarded nobel peace prizes for bringing attention to the problem.
*stares bitchily at Al Gore and the one nordic-country girl they got to replace him when he got less photogenic*

Yeah, I thought all that stuff about 'denazifying' Ukraine (via total regime change) came after Putin's declaration of war. If the Russians get most or all of the priorities they were after before formally popping off the fireworks anyway - well, this entire war seems like the sort of situation that could've been averted a couple weeks and a couple thousand lost lives ago with capable and realistic leadership.
Yeah, but they had Zelenski and Poroshenko, instead.
Reminder, we are talking about a real, literal TV clown:

While that's hilarious, I was honestly thinking more-so about Biden, Blinken, Nuland etc. when I was writing up my post. TBH if Zelensky actually manages to pull through with a reasonable compromise that leaves Ukraine mostly intact and himself in the presidential office with his head still attached (and I do think that's the best case scenario for Ukraine itself since it's pretty obvious that nobody wants to start WW3 for him, when that's what it would take to prevent a Ukrainian defeat either tomorrow or next month or next year)...

Well. I would unironically be impressed and consider him a lot more intelligent than the aforementioned Western leaders, who seem very eager to fight to the last Ukrainian, hellbent on forcing a solid Sino-Russian alliance, and pursuing green policies that wouldn't make sense even outside of an economic war with Russia all at the same time.
