@Captain-General, you sadly missed some good and bad stuff.
I loved the Kylo Ren/Rey lightsaber duel with Snoke's guards, though I admit it's a whole lot better remixed to Britney Spears'
Toxic.
I liked the whole Luke screwing up and trying to slice and dice lil Benny Solo, and that driving him to the dark side. It's the first time Star Wars has done a villain backstory that's not cardboard cutout or fallen flat. It felt realistic, both with screwing up parenting and people being bad at teaching.
Plus, hey, crusty cantankerous old Luke is pretty good. Some people do run and hide, just like losing a kid - or having them go bad - does bust up marriages, as it did with Han and Leia. Plus, watching Kylo get smacked around by Luke's illusion and youth and skill losing to old age and treachery is just sweet.
There was the traditional lack of CAP in Star Wars, but hey, how many TIEs died in the tubes of the Death Star, and how many X-wings never bounced Vader until the Falcon showed up? Shitty fighter tactics is pretty much a Star Wars requirement.
Poe et. al's reaction to Holdo's complete lack of leadership and dogmatic holding to Josh Lyman's Super Secret Plan to Stop Inflation is also realistic. We've all run into people like that. And, frankly, many of us do exactly what Poe did, just better and less overtly. Poe's Finnshipping is hella cute in a dorky sort of way. And how many times does Finn get tazed is hilarious.
So there's some potential. I liked it in the theater, because I got into it, and that covered up a lot of the sins. But the holes become apparent when you're out of the theater and can analyze. Were that it, you'd watch it, grab the fast forward button for the silly bits, and enjoy what's there to be had.
It's all the political bullshit around the film that wrecked it.
