Marvel X-Men '97

So the latest episode was...very intense, and I am thinking maybe it has something to do with what the director/writer guy quit just before the series started airing.

It was an artistic masterpiece, I legit was agape with awe/horror, after previously being elated in a way I haven't been since...fuck it, this is right up there with Code Geass's "Euphinator Moment", or maybe Star Wars Order 66, for emotional impact and twisting the plot/emotions in powerful ways.

I'm nervous because time travel in X-men has been done well a grand total of...once and every other time they introduced time travel and mutant massacres, X-men goes down the crapper. I mean obviously, these characters are coming back as we see them in future episode synopsises. I just hope they don't botch the landing.

I think the stuff with Cable is going to be key to it, and I think we are going to see a lot of stuff beyond just this arc.

Supposedly a 3rd season is already being worked on, so the show runners are set to release at least 2 seasons, likely 3, and X-Men has the potential to go on for a very long time, due to how many characters it touches, that aren't in the current MCU.

I just hope they don't revert to typical woke shlock now that they have done their 9/11 episode. The Post 9/11 America is what allowed a lot of the woke crap in comics to pop up to begin with ESPECIALLY with X-men. Every mutant genocide during the 2000s was essentially REMEMBER 9/11?!?

The last episode was insane, awesome, and showed how much Magneto has been holding back if he wanted to really fuck with the world.

Magneto will now be known for causing a fucking world-wide EMP via overpumping the Earth's magnetic field via the northern magnetic pole, as a response to the human-Sentinal activation.

Luckily Pro. X is back on Earth at the end of the episode, so he might be able to talk Magneto down.

I'm fearful this will go down the same way the comics have.

I haven't read the comics, barely remember most of the end of X-Men OG, and mostly get stuff from the live action films and second-hand knowledge.

I have no idea what is going to go down, but this is an attack/method Magneto always had the power to try, he just never did before because of the whole 'EMP the world' was never before even close to a 'lesser evil'.

This time, this time EMP'ing the Earth was Magneto losing his patience, remove the threat, while trying to be relatively 'gentle' yet effective.

There is a real possibility that time-travel may be involved again at some point, beyond just the stuff with Cable and Bishop.

They basically just made magneto's power closer to his comic counterpart which is pretty cool.

Watching this series now after watching some of the classic X-Men the Animated Series episodes to refamiliarize myself.

It's overall pretty decent but I just hit Episode Eight and just about had a brain aneurysm.

ABSOLUTE POINTS?

This shit again?

Absolute points and Canon Events and nonsense plot devices like those almost never existed in comic book and so called "multiverse" type of stories and yet every comic book franchise seems to love diving into alternate histories and time travel BUTT have these little unchanging bits of history which just magically can't change because unexplained *reasons.*

It just is.

I wish Phoenix consuming the universe was an Absolute Point.

*Flips over a table*

/Rant Over

Other then that though, good show. Would recommend.

Well if I was going to play marvel rivals before I got turned off by the fact the X-Men are from the karkoa era.

Oh really? I thought they were from some Marvel 2099 era or something. I honestly haven't looked into the lore behind that particular games setting however.

I would've hoped they just made a BS Altverse like they did with Heroes of the Storm or Injustice or whatever.

Random article I found on the Friends of Humanity. I honestly didn't notice they were all white in this latest season which is interesting, because I did actually mentally note that they were diverse in the classic Fox Cartoon.

Conversely, there are now female Friends of Humanity militants, so that's nice.

An interesting video on how X-Men '97 retconned quite a bit to basically hook up the show runner's favorite character from the franchise (Magneto) with his favorite waifu from the franchise (Rogue).

Still watching the video (I've seen a few of her videos before, I think I generally agree with most of her takes). I'd agree the Rogue and Magneto romance came out of nowhere and can be considered a bit of a retcon. I don't have an issue with Rogue and Magneto having a relationship but it came out of nowhere and wasn't developed and was done at the expense of the Gambit-Rogue relationship.

Her emphasis on Magneto being manipulative is fine, but calling him a 'groomer' and hebephile/pedophile seems a bit of a stretch. Regardless of what her age was in the comics, she always seemed like a young adult or adult in this cartoon. There is an age gap though but I won't single out this series for having such an age gap when such a thing is common practice in media and pop culture in general, across all ideological and political spaces it seems.

It was a negative portrayal of Rogue though and poorly implemented. It could've been done better but would've required better implementation.

With that said I still like the series overall. I feel the Rogue-Magneto relationship was a weak spot and done artificially.

On the Rogue/Magneto front I agree. The term Pedophile has become entirely overused to the point where it's become the right wing equivalent of rapist. Rogue is in her early to mid 20s for goodness sake she's more than old enough to make (and take responsibility for) her own decisions. You can definitely argue he's manipulative but he's manipulating another adult NOT a child.

No my big issue is how much the director tried to make magneto the "good guy all along" because he himself is knee deep into "Wakanda Forever" and all it did was make Rogue look like a two bit backstabbing traitorous hussie.

Again as honest trailers said. "It's easy to make Magneto right when you make all of the humans LITERAL zombie cyborgs" (complete with the rotting flesh tone and blank white eyes BTW.)

Rogue was reduced emotionally. I don't even think of it as backstabbing, but like the video touched upon, it made her seem like she was emotionally unstable or immature when that is not the case with her portrayal in most of this series.

With that said, I do think overall the show was pretty good. The animation was excellent. The voice acting was great. The show did a great job in adapting most of the storyline regarding Bastion/Legacy Virus and the Mutant Massacre on Genosha and kind of adopting the two together. And the whole bit with the Jean Grey clones and whatnot as well. And it did a good job in spite of how messy those comic book storylines actually are (like look them up, this cartoon adaption is much cleaner). I was impressed.

I even liked the Motendo episode with Jubilee and Victor and the Mojoverse.

Still would recommend watching the show.

If anything, it will have less of the issues regarding Rogue-Magneto since the main showrunner has been replaced. Doesn't mean it'll be just as good, but I just saw an article saying the next season of X-Men 97 won't come out until 2026 which honestly, is a good thing.

We've seen how quality drops on animated shows with cut budgets and development times... see season two and three of Invincible compared with the first season.

The reason she calls him a pedo is because the timeline of when things have to take place make her a minor when she is brought to him by Mystique. If she was 18 when she joined the X-Men, she had to be a minor when this took place, hence the assertion that he groomed her and is a pedophile.
