The most believable origin I've seen so far is that the medical laboratory in wuhan was investigating a Coronovirus strian sampled from bats in another provence, and managed to infect themselves due ot a lack of laboratory safety.
I don't belive that the Chinese did this on purpose.
Quite simply put its because Russia hasn't nuked them. Russia has openly stated that their response to a bioweapon attack would be to nuke the offending party and while the Russian government is filled with assholes their intelligence network is defiantly good enough to have figured out if it was a Chinese bioweapon with in 2 months of this being a thing.

It wasn't a bioweapon, just legitimate medical reasearch into a virus a research found in bats, and then post communist incompetence did the rest.
People think that china is smart but fail to realize that 10% of any group are really stupid and china has a lot of people.
