China Wuhan Virus Pandemic

@Train Dodger you’re panicking again. If there really are ten times as many cases, as does seem likely, your analysis of the severe pneumonia cases would suggest a death toll between 0.43-4.3pct. So it still might be lower than the current official one, significantly. I also haven’t read that article thoroughly enough to see what age the victims skewed toward as well as preexisting conditions, both of which are already known to cause numbers to trend upward for fatalities in this disease.

Oh Christ. In those with critical illness that has progressed to severe pneumonia, the mortality rate is 61.5%. They drew 52 critically-ill patients from a group of 710. Twenty survived. Thirty-two died.

You guys do realize this means the overall mortality is at least 4.5%, right? Hell, even North Korea’s news said it’s a 4.3% mortality rate. That’s with good-quality care. When the hospitals are overwhelmed, that figure rises.

Also, according to some estimates, China is diagnosing only five percent of all cases.

The math says China is covering up bodies. A lot of bodies.
Better start stocking up before the stores go empty.
That's why I'll do it during the next days. Better be safe than sorry.

European Union Community spread will continue throughout the entire treaty zone... You should take measures not to leave the house except for work and trips to stores. Trips to stores should be to small, local stores without a lot of mixing with outsiders. A stockpile of food and water and hard currency instruments should be maintained in case of bank disruptions. Absolutely no use of public transit, if at all possible. If it must be used, wear an N95 or P95 rated mask (like for doing housework)—surgical masks are perfectly ineffective.

These precautions are appropriate for EU denizens now that community spread is occurring in Italy. At some point in the future they may become appropriate for Americans, but there is still no sustained community spread here, so not yet.

to be fair that is still a useful function.
Unfortunately, not enough people seem to realize that the WHO isn't actually equipped to handle world health crises, what with it serving primarily as containment for much of the corruption and fraud rampant in international politics (just like the rest of the UN); which is why they've been given the opportunity to drop the ball on the Corona virus:

Seriously; do not trust anything associated with the UN, especially the WHO. I honestly think America would be better off withdrawing from the organization; at least then, we could prepare for the reality that we're on our own during an international crisis.

Thank you, had to look that up. The available equivalent here is FFP2, so I'll get some of these.

Edit: Also going to get in contact with HR.

Yup, the Dear Leader himself has given a speech yesterday about how much of a national security issue lab safety is, and the Ministry of Science has released a directive about improving it in microbiology labs...
Take that as you will.
HA!
A few weeks ago the New York post site published an op-ed telling people not be afraid of the virus!
Then:
Most important, Americans have reason to trust officials like Azar when he says, “The risk to the American public remains low at this time, and we are working to keep this risk low.”

Now:

China has unleashed a plague on its own people. It’s too early to say how many in China and other countries will ultimately die for the failures of their country’s state-run microbiology labs, but the human cost will be high.

But not to worry. Xi has assured us that he is controlling biosecurity risks “to protect the people’s health.” PLA bioweapons experts are in charge.

I doubt the Chinese people will find that very reassuring. Neither should we.

Oh, lovely. They've sent me a mo-ron.

Well Corona Chan goes to the most unlikely places and I had a hunch this may happen.

The Taliban better get that negotiations done before the coofing spreads.

Weeb cults set up for Corona Chan.

A Twitter response summed this perfectly.

What will Eugene say now?!

Considering the historical Love/Hate relationship between the Chinese and the Russians, this should be interesting.

Annually the Flue kills between 200,000 to half a million people. Given the briefing I had on the virus on in-service training today, I'll be worried if and when the death rates match or exceed it. So far, nothing tops Ebola in the amount of people it can kill.

Feb. 19 (UPI) -- China is using all available measures to stop the spread of the new strain of coronavirus that has killed more than 2,000 people, but some of the state's policies are provoking backlash and unintended consequences.

I've seen the future...

At this rate with all the chaos, livestock dying or getting slaughtered, food not getting shipped via truck and rail, or being distributed to the cities and towns, etc. etc. with the quarantines and lockdowns, you run into another problem in China (on top of everything else): Are the people getting fed?? People going hungry does not lead to stability.
