In today's episode of people reading too much into things we have the mayor of Oakland:

'Nooses' in Oakland park were exercise aids, man says

Oakland’s mayor says five ropes found hanging from trees in a city park are nooses and racially-charged symbols of terror but a resident says he put them up simply for exercse

A black guy put some ropes on trees so people could exercise with them, some of which had plastic in them, and the mayor had them taken down because some idiot thought they were nooses. What followed was also one of the saddest arguments I've ever seen in my life:

“Intentions don’t matter when it comes to terrorizing the public,” Schaaf said. “It is incumbent on all of us to know the actual history of racial violence, of terrorism, that a noose represents and that we as a city must remove these terrorizing symbols from the public view.”

“The symbolism of the rope hanging in the tree is malicious regardless of intent. It’s evil, and it symbolizes hatred,” Williams said.

Heard about this on TimCast, he described it as an attempt to repeal the Civil Rights Act. Reading through the proposition myself, he's right. All it says is that you would be able to discriminate as you wished, it's not a pro-black piece of racist legislation. It's honestly completely disingenuous to be coming from the Democrats, and would probably split the state.

What I mean is, if it were to pass and places like Silicon Valley or parts of LA started using it to not hire whites or straights or whatever, then it is likely that those disenfranchised would move to where they could live, which would effectively segregate the state.
