When everyone is a hero.. No one will be

Ok at the risk of being called a bitch, have we gotten a little carried away with declaring everyone a hero just because their job is difficult? First it was soldiers and first responders ( ok I can see that). Now we have all healthcare workers called heros in addition to everyone else that is classified as essential. Call me a bitch if you want but it just seems to be getting a bit much.

Helathcare workers, Soldiers, and first responders are groups that all save lives at a risk to their own (in a pandemic). That is pretty heroic.

But everyone who is labeled as essential? Not so much.

And being that I work as a grocery clerk to pay for college I should know. Seriously other than way too many hours considering that I'm in class(albeit online) and wearing a mask pretty much nothing changed. Nothing heroic here just a regular guy doing his job albeit being paid slightly more than usual which is nice

I think we should be using more precise terminology, that though they aren't heroes, they are still acting in a praiseworthy manner. I am sure we have a wide array of linguistic tools for situations such as this, we just need to use them.

As a Soldier who has yet to be deployed, and I sit at a computer all day not really contributing to anything but for my CG to read.
Am I a Hero? I don't consider myself one but others thank me for my service and call me one.
I just volunteered.

Sounds like a friend of mine. People call him a hero and thank him for his service if he mentions he was in the Air Force. He then tells them " I'm not a hero I was a dentist".
