She was first laid down in 1939 when the 1940 Invasion of Netherlands by Nazi Germany. That delayed things for a bit and she wasn't launched until December of 1944 with the intention of being expended as a blockship. It served for almost three decades in the Royal Netherlands Navy as the
De Ruyter before being decommissioned in 1972. A year later it entered Peruvian service and was named the
BAP Almirante Grau. At one time it was the last gun cruiser in service with any Navy reportedly but did receive antiship missiles as a result of one of its modernizations. It was decommissioned in 2017, with intentions of making it a Museum Ship. But those plans fell through and instead it was sold for scrap.
