After we get the General Purpose Destroyers and Frigates. We need to revisit getting a proper Cruiser. A ship that can operate far from a Battlegroup and do the show the flag and other duties that don't require a Battlegroup showing up. Preferably nuclear powered for global range.
honestly might be hard to build a proper cruiser. A zumwalt sized design is likely the biggest the budget can bare. The last time we looked at a proper cruiser its was at least 20 kilotons

That is the dumbest thing anyone has ever said about Clinton. He is the reason we are having to rebuild what was lost.
And you are an even dumber idiot if you think Bill Clinton had much say in the US budget except for signing the bills passed by both houses of a very penny pinching Republican controlled House and Senate which hated him.

Look we had a budget to run our boats. Congress approved it. He disbanded the Boat Units anyway. No logic. No rhyme or reason. Just because he could. So save your Clinton worship for yourself.

Well we could build in the size range of the Virginias. I think Congress could approve funds for a few hulls.

the virginas aren't exactly cruisers either and for that matter are about the size of flight III burke in terms of displacement. they just got reclassified during construction from being destroyer leaders. the last proper cruiser we built was long beach.

Technically the Spruance Class was the size of a World War II light Cruiser. The tonnage for various classes of ships has changed over the years.

true. I should have clarified that I was referring to a ship built with a proper cruiser hull(with all the strength and the like that implies) and not merely enlarged destroyers

Ah Gotcha. Well a larger version of the new DDX with a few alterations could fit the bill.

honestly that's what I suspect will happen, anyways what's your thoughts on the proposed design of the DDX?
It has potential. But I would rather it have 2 main deck guns instead of just one. Although I like the Burkes I have never been a fan it having only one Deck Gun.

indeed. if nothing else putting one of those italian rapid firing 76mm guns over the hangar would work

the italian 76mm can reach out to 40km with specialized ammo and moreover it has a tested anti missile ability
And a single 3" OTO Melera is what the Perrys got ... in a wierd spot for a main gun. They were designed in the early 1970's.

Modern warships don't get into gunfights unless it's an emergency.

Rest in Peace Almirante Grau. Dubbed the 'Last of the Gun Cruisers' now in the process of being scrapped.

She was first laid down in 1939 when the 1940 Invasion of Netherlands by Nazi Germany. That delayed things for a bit and she wasn't launched until December of 1944 with the intention of being expended as a blockship. It served for almost three decades in the Royal Netherlands Navy as the De Ruyter before being decommissioned in 1972. A year later it entered Peruvian service and was named the BAP Almirante Grau. At one time it was the last gun cruiser in service with any Navy reportedly but did receive antiship missiles as a result of one of its modernizations. It was decommissioned in 2017, with intentions of making it a Museum Ship. But those plans fell through and instead it was sold for scrap.
