Gulf state scraps laws criminalising alcohol use, suicide and cohabitation

The United Arab Emirates has unveiled a series of secular-leaning legal reforms, decriminalising alcohol and suicide, allowing the cohabitation of unmarried couples and criminalising honour crimes against women.

It needs to be said that citizens of the UAE are more like 15-20% aristocracy, as the most of the population is composed out of expats that work hard for the citizens. While menial workers are often "fellow" muslims from Pakistan, the large number of doctors, engineers etc etc are secular/Christian Western specialists.

So, people who attempt suicide in Dubai and survive will be no longer criminals. Westernisation of culture.

I thought you would be against these being Christian and all.
Suicide is wrong yeah but one where the people need help not a jail sentence. Pretty sure that's the Christian view?

You mean the destruction of their culture cause that is what Westernization means.
"Culture" and thats not a religion thing. Its the UAE, your either a literal job slave or a rich tycoon. At this point the hallmark of their culture is crushing the souls of their imported labor, buying increasingly ridiculous luxury goods and making oversized structures and artifical landscapes that will never make back their initial investment.

Seriously does anybody even remember anything about Arab culture in the now UAE from before the oil boom?

I’m somewhat ambivalent about this, I don’t think westernization is a good thing if it means secularization and undoing the religious mores of a society.

*shrug*

There is the cohabitation and alcohol use as well.

Hence my point. Westernization means destruction of your culture. Its why you have that youtube video of leftists screaming you have no culture. Said Leftist is correct. He doesn't have a culture either though funny enough.

I never said culture is inherently good. Just that it gets destroyed.

Any church actually still go for the no alcohol thing? Honestly don't know how big a thing that is. As to cohabitation 🤷‍♂️ I guess.

As to the rest that depends on what people consider the core of their culture to be I suppose.

They probably don't. Lordsoffire seem to me as a real christian so hence my question. I have mentioned before that the mainstream churches say they are Christians but aren't Christians in truth. Gay Adam and Gay Eve? Lol. Communion is skittles lets not talk about George Floyd.

Doesn't matter. As time passes, said core will die or become commercialized to hell and back. Its what happens. Like I don't give a shit about UAE or Arab culture in general. Its just me commenting on what I have observed from the West and what will soon happen to the the Middle east.

There is nothing inherently immoral about alcohol. Jesus first miracle was turning water to wine, over a hundred gallons of it.

Cohabitation is immoral. That doesn't mean it's the state's business to enforce that.

Suicide is immoral, but it is your life. God gave it to you, and while it's wrong to abuse it, that is your decision to make.

Alcohol has also saved millions, billions of lives because it allowed people to have safe liquids to drink, when raw water could be full of different bugs/bacteria/viruses that could kill you.

Alcohol's antiseptic properties are often overlooked for its recreational affects.

Also can't forget the alcohol was important in the genesis of civilization, especially the formation of cities. As I recall many early cities formed around breweries.

Anyways on the suicide issue they should really put more focus into prevention, and by prevention I mean preventing the douchebaggery that drives these migrant workers to suicide.

Its a thing for some branches of Protestantism, not popular ones now. Also Mormons and JV if you count those.
Meanwhile in Catholicism:

I am pretty sure they are committing suicide in this case due to being treated practically like slaves.

I still remember the stories I heard from a former-OFW-nurse who went to work there

Aside from being treated horribly by racist Arabs, they weren't allowed their faith, they needed to go to the Black Market for anything remotely "immoral", there were horrible immams who even relentlessly chased and spat on her and her friend for going "unescorted"

And well....she once sheltered an OFW who upon arriving in Saudi Arabia, had her passport torn apart and made to work near-24/7

For the entire extended family too

If she was caught, she'd both be tried for "illegally immigrating" for not having her passport and probably for being "unescorted" too

That is admittedly less relevant in places of the world where drinking tea and coffee is normal and the hot sand of the desert can actually boil the water in a cezve for you.

Isn't the whole alcohol thing overstated as well? And that Europeans boiled water when they could as well?

And yes, it is less relevant, but as I remember coffee only became widespread starting in the 1500's?
