Beats the heck out of looking like feckless pussies who can't even defend our borders. Also, our sovereignty is far more important than how we look to foreigners. It's not a bad thing to cultivate a good reputation, but sovereignty is non-negotiable.
We wouldn't even need to build a wall if our border guards shot a few invaders every year to remind everyone else to enter legally or not at all.

Most of the "wall" is just a wire fence, only relatively short segments are the big concrete walls you see on TV. They use wire cutters, but it's rare for any breeches to occur I think, pretty sure most happen during riots and such, not as part of a covert action.

The real “wall” is the “Wall of Guns”, they probably aren’t desperate enough to run through the moment they actually start REALLY shooting.

I'm not too versed in Canada's immigration. It could be Canada's weather where it snows a lot to it's current immigration issues which leads to Mexicans finding the US a safer bet.
Considering the number of them that find their way into various agricultural operations in norther border states, I doubt it's the weather so much as Canada is probably much stricter in requiring proof of citizenship or their version of a work visa in getting employment even in those types of jobs.
