History The Responsibility of Emperor Hirohito and Japanese Apologies/Reparations for Crimes Against Humanity

And they did it at least twice: after the Meiji Restoration and after WWII.

Before that, first emperors have real power, but lost it to first aristocrat, and later samurai supported shoguns. And before that, they have female empress/China chronicles wrote about her/ which was removed from official Japan history.

Here's the problem: you and I might think in that sane way, but out there are people who are not sane. People who think in collectivist terms, who will pretend that you personally are responsible for anything that any of your ancestors ever did.

To which the correct response is "Aight, we weren't perfect in an imperfect time. Fuck off now."

But they won't fuck off. They will start demanding "reparations" from you for whatever they claim your ancestors did. And if you get pulled into that game, no matter how much you give them it will never be enough.
Don't play their game at all.

They're going to demand that regardless though, no matter what you say or do; even if it's nothing.

Just tell them "I'm sorry you feel that way." :sneaky:

Apologies and reparations have already been made. If they're engaging in ongoing harmful actions, as Shadow stated earlier, that's another issue. But for the crimes of the past, it's already been apparently settled.

Uh, no.

You do remember that South Korea's current president, Moon Jae-in, is pro-North Korea and China; don't you?

Those plans could very well fall through at a critical moment. Besides, the response I made was more directed at the United States, because our leaders are definitely owned by China.

The Democratic Party in South Korea has always wanted the eventual goal being peaceful reunification between the two Koreas, not something retarded like North Korea taking over South Korea and adopt Best Korean Communism. It's part of their pro-Sovereign platform in which they want South Korea to be strong enough to act as independent of other countries (United States and China included) as possible. It's why he got along so well with President Trump who wanted to get the US disentangled from Korea for his own reasons.

Moon just wants to engage in conflict avoidance. He's stated the United States is South Korea's most important strategic partner, which it is, but also recognizes that his countries trade with China is twice as big as it is with the United States. So he spends his time being ambivalent on confronting China instead of the Conservative Party which is more against the CCP.

Yes, the plans could indeed fall through... which leads Japan to not wanting to put more effort into something that might fail, and Korea thinking that because the situation is so fragile, Japan should really sweeten the pot with some more reparations, leading to the current situation with the US caught in the middle.

Which is made even worse by the fact that most of our leaders are more financially invested in China than either Japan or South Korea.

Which, paradoxally, could let to brutal war. When you are in debt and have big military, best method of reducing debt is killing creditors. And becouse they care about themselves only, number of dead american and chineese do not bother them.
Those who are real leftist could consider that as making human population smaller.
P.S Iliada say, that Zeus provoked war becouse there was to many people. Some leftist ruling USA could think the same.

Nobody gives a crap about debt; what they care about is the companies they're invested in being able to sell products to the 1.4 billion people living in China. That's a huge potential market (ignoring the fact that their entire economy is poised to collapse any day now); Japan's and South Korea's just don't compare.

Selling is important - but most of those dudes belived also that human population should be smaller. Those would support war.

But they did not have the one behind all that mess handed over for trial. The Emperor himself. That could have settled everything.

Nor should he have ever stood trial. He was their God king, their living Saint and MacArthur was right to oppose the symbolic obliteration of Japanese Culture by deconsttuctivist forces, especially when two allies were even worse.

I don't believe in reparations, to anyone or any nation unless it's to the survivors and when the last of those die, the aggrieved no longer exist, it becomes a political attack on the group or nation in question.

Japan was arguably worse than Nazi Germany but as long as the US was allied with Stalin and Mao they had no right to force either nation to destroy their cultures to attone for a war whose total body count equals the internal body counts of two allies combined.

I mean, MacArthur explicitly destroyed the "Emperor is the God King" thing and that simply is not a part of modern Japanese culture. If you can destroy that element of Japanese culture, it's not a major leap to argue for destroying the throne entirely.

And even if you think that the throne needs to be preserved, that doesn't mean Hirohito needs to be preserved. There was plenty of speculation among the Japanese public and elite circles of him abdicating as a sign of atoning for the failures which had happened under his rule.
