If the staff want to splice this off into its own thread that would be good. I don't think Kerry had a shot though. Bush was riding high on war time presidency and for all that the majority of his decisions had poor long term consequences he was well liked at the time. gore though was a toss up that went to the courts. with whichever way florida went deciding the winner.

Honestly, it would likely have been better. It's hard to do worse than the Iraq war. And any stupidity from Dems running stuff would have been made up for by Dems getting hated for fucking the economy in 2008 (no idea when it would blow up, but likely faster with Dems), as they'd get blamed for the collapse.
 You're so obsessed with being anti-war that you ignore basically everything else that would have come with an Al Gore and John Kerry Presidency. Shit like that is why I'm kind of embarrassed with being libertarian.

The Iraq war caused a hundred thousand (or more, that's a lowball estimate) needless deaths, further conditioned the security state to outright lie to the American people, put us $2T in additional debt for no reason, and contributed to Osama escaping justice by distracting from the hunt for him. All because Jr wanted to avenge daddy. It also caused the rise of ISIS, and caused a million other threats as well.

It can ALWAYS be worse
Yeah, it could be worse. I'm saying its hard to be worse. Al Gore would be a moron, but a $2T additional debt moron on top of the rest of Bush's doings? I doubt it.

Secondly, Bush got to appoint two Supreme Court justices: Alito and Roberts. While neither have been as stalwart Originalist as many Conservatives wanted, Kerry likely would have appointed radical leftists to the Court (as Dems ALWAYS do)... and with the death of Chief Justice Rehnquist in 2005 you'd likely have seen Kerry appoint Ginsburg as Chief Justice.
This however, is a really good point.

Heh... yeah. Trump was the one that was gonna start ww3.

What a joke.

All the people that were saying that are now gleefully cheering as the dems and the neo-cons do everything they can to start a nuclear war.

Yeah...

Honestly, it both amuses and grates me how people were screaming about that in 2016, when Hillary Clinton was vocally advocating for a no-fly zone over Syria. Not to mention her role in destroying Libya during Obama's tenure, having a hearty chortle about "We came, we saw, he died!" when deposing Gaddafi and all that. 👿

I still don't grok why they backed France getting rid of Gaddafi. It utterly destroyed American credibility when it came to making deals with some of these dictators to de-weaponize/militarize. Gaddafi had actually played ball when it came to getting rid of Islamic terrorists and reducing WMDs, and all we had to do was let him have his African hellhole, and we couldn't even do that... and the worst part is that the country is now WORSE OFF than it was under him and his government.

France isn't an ally. It's a repeated buddy fucker. Vietnam, Ghaddafi, claiming the liberation of Paris as if they did that, etc.

Sorry to derail again, but there are times when I wonder if loads of American blood and treasure could’ve been saved if we told France “No and fuck off!”, at least in those cases. Really, it seems to me they’ve been taking advantage of the US’s generosity and gung-ho militarism from day one, so while I wouldn’t go so far as to kick them out of NATO, I sometimes wonder if they’d be best ignored rather than listened to. :cautious:

Yes, but he purposely stole credit from the Allies in his speech, proclaiming that Paris liberated itself, basically ignoring the 4th infantry's role. Hence why I call the french buddyfuckers.

Huh; was wondering where you got them claiming credit for liberating Paris all by themselves came from. 🧐

Look up a translation of his speech on his return to Paris, he acts like 'sure, the allies were there, I guess, maybe, in the distant background, but look how amazing France is.'

Why should we hide the emotion which seizes us all, men and
women, who are here, at home, in Paris that stood up to liberate itself and that succeeded in doing this with its own hands?

No! We will not hide this deep and sacred emotion. These are minutes which go beyond each of our poor lives. Paris! Paris outraged! Paris broken! Paris martyred! But Paris liberated! Liberated by itself, liberated by its people with the help of the French armies, with the support and the help of all France, of the France that fights, of the only France, of the real France, of the eternal France!

Well! Since the enemy which held Paris has capitulated into our hands, France returned to Paris. She has returned bleeding but resolute. She has returned, enlightened by this immense lesson, but more certain than ever of her responsibilities and her rights.

I say responsibilities first because for the moment we are still at war. The enemy totters but he is not yet beaten. He remains on our soil.

It would not even be enough, after what has happened, if with the help of our dear and admirable allies we chased him out of our country. We want to go to his country as we should, as conquerors.

This is why the French advance guard has entered Paris with guns blazing. This is why the great French army from Italy has landed in the south and is advancing rapidly up the Rhône valley. This is why our brave and dear Forces of the interior are going to arm themselves with modern weapons. It is for this revenge, this vengeance and justice, that we will keep fighting until the last day, until the day of total and complete victory.

This duty of war, all the men who are here and all those who hear us in France know that it demands national unity. We, who have lived the greatest hours of our History, we have nothing else to wish than to show ourselves, up to the end, worthy of France.

Long live France!

He basically acts as if it was the French alone who stormed the beaches at Normandy.

In that case, I sure hope modern France's take on World War II isn't nearly as arrogant as deGaulle was!
