Those golden rods? I prefer my Elves, Mesopotamian, and checkmate gods.
The Altmer are a type of High Elf but not who I had in mind with that comment. It's how both Drow and Dunmer are Dark Elves but they aren't the same thing. They are different takes on the Dark Elf archetype. Drow generally refers to Dark Elves in DnD (Faerunian Dark Elves to be more specific). Drowtales (the porn Atlas likes to read) seems to draw inspiration from Faerun, hence the term "Drow". I've never actually read that story so you'd have to ask Atlas for the details.
When I said I prefer High Elves, I meant "High elves in general", or Elves which could be considered part of the High Elf archetype. That Includes the Altmer but also the Noldor (who inspired the archetype), Blood/High Elves from Warcraft, the Asur from Warhammer, the Sun Elves from Faerun and a host of others.
"High Elves" refers to Elves who are immortal or long lived while also being very cultured and gifted at magic. They live in glorious magical cities that are far grander than anything humans have built. Their civilization has usually laster longer than humans have existed and it's just plain
better. High Elves are better than humans and other Elves. Especially other Elves. Usually, they are arrogant about it but not always.
Now, I won't lie. While I wasn't referring to the Altmer specifically, they
are my favorite type of Mer (Elder Scrolls Elf for those unfamilliar with the setting). If I had to say why, it's because they are
winning. In recent years, it's been popular for Elves to be smaller than humans, weaker, defeated.
Dragon Age has Elves as slaves/servants to humans. Their lessers in every way. Elves in the Witcher lost their dominance of the continent when humans arrived and their civilization is now all but gone. In almost every setting with Elves, they were once powerful but are now in decline. Humanity is taking their place. Not because humanity is better than Elves (indeed, we are usually worse) but because we breed faster. I hate that.
That's why, when Skyrim came out (can't believe it's already been 8 years), I found myself liking the Thalmor so much. Yes, they are assholes, but they are also winning against humanity. They are an example (the only example I know of) of a glorious Elven civilization encountering humans and not declining horribly.
As for Mesopotamian elves (the Dwemer), they have their charm but I prefer the Altmer. I've always been more of a fantasy fan than a science fiction one. Magic is simply much more interesting than technology to me.
