The Soviet Big Seven (circa 1981)!

2xrxshtdzt471.jpg

Starring:

ZSU-23/4 Armored Anti-Aircraft Weapon
MI-24 Hind-D Gunship
BMP Armored Amphibious Infantry Combat Vehicle
122mm SP Gun M-1974
T-72 Tank
SA-8 Gecko Surface to Air Missile
152mm SP Gun M-1973

What do you think the US or NATO equivalent BIG 7 would be circa 1981? Or perhaps now?

EDIT: Oops wrong thread... meant to post this in the Armored Vehicle one :p This isn't some meta humor to dunk on the Soviet military. I have nothing but respect for Soviet style communism and militarism. :sneaky:

It's interesting that the T-64 is not on it, especially as at this time it probably still outnumbered T-72 in Western theater.
It would be difficult to make such list for entire NATO as there are so many different systems in each category.

American 7 list would probably be:
M1 Abrams
M2 Bradley (it was entering production)
M109
M270 MLRS
M163
AH-1 Cobra
M551 Sheridan or if we include fix winged aircraft then A-10

Yeah that's just the RTS in me wanting to categorize everything neatly and fit square pegs into round holes. It'd probably make more sense to have it for the major powers. USA and Britain and France probably have enough to cover having seven main vehicles.

The A-10 would be a neat addition since I suppose there is no reason that the Big 7 would have to be a war machine type to war machine type matchup or equivalent. Plus the A-10, despite being operated by the Air Force, seems almost more iconic then the M551 Sheridan does when it comes to the US Ground Forces during that era ironically enough. And if not the Bradley, then I'd suppose it would be the M113A2.... which when compared to the BMP... feels bad man. :p

The TOW missile can basically be mounted on all US light armor/wheel vehicles in service since it's introduction.

Stryker, M2/M3, Humvee, M151 jeep, M113.

M113 with the SPIKE N-LOS ATGM Launcher

And the mightiest M113 of them all... the M113 that can deploy an MGM-52 Lance (nuclear capable) tactical surface to surface ballistic missile.

M113Lance.jpg

Might need a little tune up though...
