Star Wars Star Wars Discussion Thread - LET THE PAST D-! Oh, wait, nevermind

Just now noticing this.
She...She does know there was an extensive EU developed over, like, 30 years of comic books and full-length novel series, right? Like...Even if they still throw the things from 'canon' and hare off on their own iteration of things, they own SW and all those belonged in that IP (I assume?) so my rough understanding of IP suggests they'd have been free to lift 'inspiration' pretty freely from the stuff without violating copyright...right?

Maybe that's unfair. But still a boneheaded thing to say.

I'll be fair to Disney/writers and say this seems like 'Endor holocaust' levels of being too critical as handwavy super-duper future-materials seem to be the easy answer.
...Though, also, judging by the above, I imagine running around gobbling up stars would inspire too many comparisons to the sun-crusher, and DiSnEy WaNtEd tO Do iT's OwN tHinG (am...am I doing that meme right?).

I suppose all the fun old EU stories just weren't woke enough to consider or something. Even though seeing Dark Empire on the big screen would have been much more fun than the sequel trilogy is.

I think there’s also the fact that most people never read/watched/played the Expanded Universe, going by what I’ve seen of TV shows and movies, they only ever reference the movies when it comes to Star Wars

Not even that cartoon made by Samurai Jack’s creator and had General Grievous being all fucking Badass

Like with the MCU(though people watch tbe TV shows)people barely know of the “even more nerdy” side like the comics

The new sequels were exploiting and sort of rehashing plots due to how much they know people got nostalgia.....well that was for the first film.....then they wanted to just keep on subverting our expectations

I talked about it once with some guy on the internet, but the amount of attention a piece of fiction receives depends on the amount of effort it takes to watch it.....also the fact that people look down on animated stuff as being for kids or something

Who here only knew about ASOIAF till they knew about the show, same for Witcher, who knew about the books till they played the game

the Witcher books were basically only in Polish before the games though...

Do YOU read Polish?

Nope, but I think it’s safe to say that this popularity helped get it translated

Shame the author’s an ass, should have signed on for that permanent royalty than spitting on the idea of videogames ever being successful

So obtuse you could stage a hostage situation and they'll still continue to mutter NPC gibberish.

I will admit Daisy Ridley rapping the first eight episodes of Star Wars is probably the best Star Wars scene she's done so far. I thought she'd do some cringey White person snooze rap/lyric reading... but she actually had some resonance in her voice.

I should listen to that old star wars rap again.

This not the east or the west side. No it's not.

To all you Vader haters out there we'll blow your planet up.

We got death star.

They released a new version of the Star Wars Gangsta Rap.... with updated FLASH ANIMATIONS for the video IIRC.

Luke got it on with a red head. Considering how Hollywood appear to be changing just about every red-head from whatever source material they're tainting into a black woman, that's probably the biggest reason there.

Of course - he has to see if he can throw a wrench in it just like he did with the sequel trilogy. ;)

Is he even needed for it to get WOKE? Most of Hollywood was already WOKE AF but only got crazier lately

Honestly I never got that complaint about TLJ. It didn't strike me as a particularly WOKE film. As far as I could tell the real problem is that Rian was so eager to subvert expectations that he systematically forgot to ask "Ok, but are people expecting x to happen because it's the logical course of action for this character if they haven't spent the previous month huffing paint?"

The example I've seen argued about most often is the mutiny on the Bounty Raddus, but I had thought that was less about strong admiral Holdo being strong, and more subverting the trope of the righteous hero saving his friends from the incompetent officer.
