China so far (and predictably) has been quiet regarding whether it suffered any casualties but Indian news sources are claiming the Chinese suffered at least 43 casualties, many of them serious.

A few things concern me:

1. If this were India and Pakistan, I might not be as concerned. Both know each others "right and left limits." China and India? Not so much.

2. Both sides aren't willing to admit that with the casualty levels seen here, there probably was an exchange of fire. The remote location makes it easier to cover that up.

3. Neither side wants war, especially over some of the most remote places on Earth. But, accidents happen.

Also add to this, these two factors: India sees itself as an emerging world power, while China is doing damn near everything short of declaring war to try to position itself as "China # 1". Neither side wants war, sure...but accidents can and will happen, especially with a lot of ambitions at play.

A sino indian war has one very important factor.

China is the single most middle eastern oil dependent nation on the planet with out that oil they literally can not feed themselves and in order for that oil to reach china giant slow oil tankers must move through indian waters. A Sino indian war is essentially this. The Chinese must win quickly if they do not then the Indian navy keeps that oil out of Chinese hands and china experiences famines in mass.

Tankers can take longer routes and unless Indian navy goes tanker hunting against neutral shipping all over the globe it will merely increase the fuel prices for China, though that will be bad for their economy.

The Chinese navy is vastly superior to India’s last time I looked. Any attempt by India to cut china’s trade would be met with about everything the PLN can throw at them. Which is way more than India has in either tonnage or quality at the moment.

The PLA Navy would have to traverse the Straits of Malacca, go all the way around to the other side of India and then somehow maintain a supply chain all the way from China to the Gulf of Hormuz (around India) . Only one, possibly two navies in the world I know of who have that capability.

The Indians could park some warships off of Hormuz and try pick out and seize any tankers bound for China.

Even if China could get supplies via the Panama Canal or Cape of Good Hope, any oil leaving it's origin via Hormuz could be stopped. That leaves out everyone in the mid-east but the Saudis (and most of their oil also leaves via Hormuz I believe).

The same thing also applies in any Sino American war

Seriously though, someone needs to find a video of this fight... and then put this music over the top of it 😄

Why does this remind me of the beginnings of the first world war with their aggressive showboating?

And that's the other thing. You can totally have a devastating conventional war between two or more major powers, even nuclear powers, without the use of nuclear weapons or even strategic nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons can very much just be a preventive measure for decisive victory by one side or the other, not for a massive border conflict which could still kill or maim tens of thousands and redraw borders permanently. Sacrificing your cities or your entire nation is a big step after all in escalation.

I'm pretty sure Russia would be thrilled to sell China all the oil and gas they need, be it via tanker or the recently built pipelines...

not enough oil to supply all their needs, yes Russia would make a killing and the oil would help bejing but its not enough to cover the needs of a billion plus people all over the country.
