Fallout Perpetual Debate of Bethesda Versus Interplay/Obsidian Fallout World Design

Mirelurks in FO3 is one of the best additions to Fallout Bethesda ever did, its appropriately 50's monster movie, fits the universe, isn't powercreep and even just LOOKS nice.
I also like the addition of MedX, it also fits the universe and I am frankly willing to admit it should've been in FO1-2 too.
Want to know what actually bothers me about FO3/4 when it comes to lore and consistency?

Jet being a thing on the East Coast... and retconning it to be a pre-war drug. FO2 made a Big Deal about the origin of Jet and it being a New Thing... and that's all ignored and retconned in FO3/4.

Oh yeah, Jet's retcons are notorious and a good example on how nobody at Bethesda actually played the original games.

I could believe Jet getting to the east eventually, but pre-war? Nope!

I personally think for a society to get addicted to huffing mutated cow shit instead of a pre war drug makes less sense to me and I prefer the retcon honestly 🤷

Like who the hell is gonna trust a potentially rapist Twink telling you to smoke some radioactive cow shit?

Pre-War Jet sounds safer lmao

0_o you think most crackheads on the street know what's in their drugs?...Most people have no clue what Jet is, they only know it gives you one hell of a buzz.

No, they played the original games. There's to many consistent lore tidbits thrown through the entire game, heck, FO3 includes references to the Midwest Brotherhood of Steel from Fallout Tactics if you go looking on the Brotherhood's computers in the Pentagon.

It's that I suspect they felt Jet was to "iconic" to leave out, plus it had a specific mechanical niche that no other drug from FO1/2 covered (boosting AP points/movement speed) and thus from a mechanical perspective if they wanted to have a wide variety of drugs for people to use they needed that niche filled. You note you like the addition of MedX, that it works for the lore, etc., but it also filled a specific mechanical niche that no other drugs did (boosted damage resistance).

So they were faced with arguably three bad options. 1. They include Jet due to it's unique mechanical niche and just retcon the lore around the drug; 2. They make up a new drug that has the same mechanical effect and have to come up with a lore justification for it*; or 3. they simply do not have a drug in that mechanical niche and thus end up being mechanically retrograde from the prior two games.

They chose option 1 because it, in many ways, is the simplest and maintains item consistency between games while not sacrificing a mechanical niche.

--------------------
* On why they didn't have to do this with MedX is simply because MedX is pretty much known by everyone to be the Australia safe rebrand of Morphine, and given the real life ubiquity of Morphine and how it's an OLD drug, everyone just rolled with it since it made perfect sense.

Nitpick, Psycho in FO1-2 boosted DR, they basically made Psycho less OP of a drug, it was a lil broken in the classic games. So they transferred DR boosting to the new MedX.
I still think it's neat how Australia's hilarious drug laws forced Bethesda to rename it to something more fitting for Fallout.

Pretty sure Pre Retcon everyone knew the literal radioactive cow shit was used to make Jet. Which honestly should have killed their customer base faster than they could recruit it

🤷

Bethesda Retcon Jet at least isn't radioactive or potentially full of parasites, it's just a toxic vape.

Nope, most people hadn't a clue what was actually in Jet. Which is why it was so effective, only a couple people actually knew how to make it.

Remember that Pete Hines actually commented about that once on Twitter? When someone pointed out that Jet shouldn't be in pre-war facilities Pete basically said that internal consistency doesn't matter and that only nerds care about that.

Which really explains a lot of things wrong with Bethesda Fallout.

That's not true he mentions "we noticed" when talking about workers getting high off of throwing Brahmin shit in a furnace.

The knowledge of the ingredient was definitely 100% known especially when such copius amounts are delivered and how the drug spread across the West Coast, the process on how to do it wasn't commonly known but the ingredients were

So yeah huffing Radioactive cow shit with parasites is Darwin Award worthy, thank god Bethesda retconned it makes the people less stupid.

TBF the writer of New Vegas said more or less the same thing when some one questioned the Survival Skill being able to purify water in New Vegas and it making FO3 Purifying process redundant.

FO inconsistency existed before Bethesda.

There is no need for a retcon, since people are actually that stupid in real life. Have you ever heard of tranq? If not, it the street name of a sedative called xylazine that when mixed with opioids creates a longer high than usual.

One of the side effects of use is that it makes your skin rot off. The people who use it look like actual zombies. And they still keep using it. I've seen the results. It's not pretty. If you don't believe me then look it up.

If people are willing do that to themselves to get high they're definitely willing to huff brahmin shit. Junkies will do anything for their next fix.

Yeah but IRL Humanity can eat the losses of a million people dying a year which is how many die from just drug use alone, a million people dying a year in the wasteland would basically destroy humanity.

That's more than the entire NCR population in FO2 and it took them almost a century of peace time to build up to that.

Bethesda has never been good at being consistent with lore, Just look at how many "Dragon Breaks" there are in TES

I genuinely don't understand what point you're trying to make with this. Obviously a million people are not dying from Jet overdose a year in the wasteland. In every society you will have a subset of the population who are total morons. The total numbers of those people will be higher in places with a higher population. But you will always have a percentage of people dumb enough to inject tranq or snort fumes from Brahmin shit.

So yes, it is completely realistic that there is a market for Jet.

There's a market there BECAUSE of Bethesda's retcon, I need not emphasize that huffing radioactive shit with parasites would kill people faster than opioids. Bethesda retconned it into not being a drug that uses radioactive shit.

And that's why the retcon is good, by FO2 lore the entire NCR people would be dead by New Vegas timeline if Jet was actually using radioactive cow shit.

Again, the Jet comes from the fumes from the dung, not the dung itself. I doubt the fumes themselves can carry parasites. And if Brahmin were radioactive then people wouldn't ranch them. The whole point of keeping Brahmin is for their meat and milk, which would be pointless if it killed you if you ate them.

And no the NCR as a whole wouldn't be dead because the vast majority of them don't use jet. Just like in real life most people don't use drugs. The ones who do use jet probably die from eventually it because it is a very harmful narcotic. We see the side effects of it in New Vegas in groups like the Fiends.

But just like in real life there will always be new idiots to replace them because like war stupidity never changes. But that is not the majority of the population.

Yeah the dung that people touch and shovel to burn, parasites CAN travel through fumes to not all of them but they can

Brahmin meat IS radioactive. It's only Bethesda lore where Brahmin milk has properties to cleanse radiation, by the canon YOU guys want Brahmins are radioactive and NCR people irradiated themselves every time they eat.

NCR sticks to Brahmins because surprise surprise it's canonically the only cattle which they've become dependent on, so the masses that can't afford rad away die from radiation poisoning according to non Bethesda lore. (If you want to use Bethesda lore then Brahmin milk cleanses radiation from the body so it cancels out the radiation)

And no the NCR as a whole wouldn't be dead because the vast majority of them don't use jet.
Source? The Mojave shows multiple examples of the NCR troopers falling to drugs like Psycho whose to say they don't also use Jet?

Just like in real life most people don't use drugs. The ones who do use jet probably die from eventually it because it is a very harmful narcotic.
That's the point Brahmin shit Jet would have never taken off realistically, that's why Bethesda retconning it into a prewar drug is good

We see the side effects of it in New Vegas in groups like the Fiends.
You mean the less harmful Pre-War drug Jet not the Brahmin shit Jet.

But just like in real life there will always be new idiots to replace them because like war stupidity never changes. But that is not the majority of the population.
In a post apocalypse society no one would use radioactive Brahmin shit they'd look for other drugs, Brahmin shit was just a stupid edge lord concept that I'm glad Bethesda retconned early all into FO3.

It would have been too lethal to be used wide spread and for it to be as famous as Fallout 2 made it to be the NCR the people would have to be literally retarded or suicidal and a large chunk of it to boot
