Will they exclude gas giants as planets, since I've heard that Jupiter could be a "near star?"
This is a myth, Jupiter is nowhere near large enough to be even a brown dwarf (which is a failed star lacking the mass for fusion.). Jupiter is about 13 times too small to be a brown dwarf which are generally about that many times too small to be a low mass star.

Yeah, someone used that nifty solar system simulator (I forget the name) where he experimented with what it'd take to turn Jupiter into a star (e.g. extra mass, et cetera).

It took a lot. A lot.

Not if you're ultra-advanced space aliens who go around building big black rectangles for humans to find on the moon...
