1950 Belgian monarchy referendum:

"The percentage of valid votes in favour of the returning of Leopold III in every electoral arrondissement. Dark green areas are strongly in favour, light green areas in favour, orange areas narrowly against, and red areas against. "

Interesting that republicanism was primarily an American thing before the start of World War I, with a few exceptions, of course, such as the French, Swiss, Portuguese, and Chinese.

If by "American thing" you're referring to all of North America, South America, and the Carribean you are correct.

EDIT: The parts of the western hemisphere which do have a monarch are constitunional monarchies and the king or queen is little more than a rubber stamp who says that the paperwork was done correctly.

Yes, I was talking about the Americas in general here. Not merely the US.

Good.

While the western hemisphere can be like a group of unruly toddlers who hate each other there's one thing we can all agree on: picking a fight with one of us means that you get to deal with all of us.

Yep; the Monroe Doctrine.

Though FWIW, I think that the US has sometimes historically abused this doctrine:

I think that it should also depend on whether foreign intervention and foreign alliances in the Americas are done for benign or for malign purposes.

The US is kinda/sorta the western hemisphere's delinquent big brother. "I can bully my younger siblings. You can not and there will be hell to pay if you try."

Sort of how Russia acts in regards to the former Soviet space! In fact, Russia has at least once publicly declared that it wants a Monroe Doctrine-style policy for the former Soviet space.

Major difference: the US isn't trying to regain lost territory. Russia is.

Yep. Russia's predatory imperialism is unhealthy. If one condemns what the US did during the Cold War in Guatemala, Chile, et cetera, then how exactly can one support what Russia is doing in Ukraine right now?

We didn't really go out of our way to get Florida or much of anything west of the Mississippi river prior to the Spanish-American War.

That was all either bought and paid for (Napolean needed cash and we could write the cheque, fr'ex) or a country (California and Texas, BTW) applying for statehood.

The California Bear Flag Revolt would have quickly crumbled without our support, no?

Anyway, off-topic, but here are maps of Europe's railways at different points in time:

Nowhere near that extent.

The effect of the Holocaust can clearly be seen in the western Soviet SSRs here.
