The things people hate him for were mostly all in SE Asia. SE Asia was never in danger of falling to real Communism. They all hate China.some times you have to do some truely horrible shit to prevent even worse things.
More important? Yes.the opening up of China is a thousand times more important to the world as opposed to whatever the fuck happened in shitholes like Chile and Cambodia.
To be fair, he was completely irrelevant since at least Bush Jr.Frankly I thought that he was dead for like sme 20-30 years ....
Same. My reaction to this news was "wait, he was still alive?!"Frankly I thought that he was dead for like sme 20-30 years ....
More important? Yes.
Worse? Also yes.
If it hadn't been for the opening up of China we would not be on the brink of WWIII at the moment, because there would never have been a "Rise of China" scenario.
I was thinking the same thing: Ding-Dong BABY.Ding dong the witch is dead.
Thank god. He may have been our monster but that doesn't help the fact that he was a monster. Life is generally better when our own acknowledged war criminals are safely ensconced in history rather than in the papers.
FUCK PRC & screw you too!I think the initial opening was worth it and frankly inevitable, though certain decisions taken after Kissinger's time could have been done better. One thing I'd observe is that in a scenario where we didn't open to China at all, you would definitely see a lot of people argue "Well, if we were just nice to China and respected them, then maybe they wouldn't be so angry at us!" By giving them an open hand only for them to swat it away, it's easier for internal and external groups to understand China's instrangience and aggression.
But even if you disagree, the debate over that is way more important than whatever happened in fucking Cambodia.
Bear me to it.Ding dong the witch is dead.

While I think his push to open China was debatable, he was not responsible for the modern issues nor the rise of China.
That lies squarely on the feet of Bill Clinton.
Something you need to understand, until Bill Clinton took office trade with China was intrinsically linked to annual human rights reviews. This kept US trade with China, and offshoring to them, very low as everyone knew they were terrible in that regard. Heck the Open China policy BARELY survived the Tiananmen Square massacre. Tibet and China treatment of Christians were also ongoing issues.
However, once Clinton took office he removed that review within his first two years in office. From that point trade with, and offshoring to, China EXPLODED, with Clinton's pro-China policies culminating in the granting of Most Favored Trade status in the late 90s.
Basically, Clinton and the Dems are who sold out to China as far back as the early 90s, and set the stage for the rise of China. HW Bush was actually a hardliner on China and likely wouldn't have changed policy... so I guess you can also ironically thank Perot for the collapse of US manufacture and offshoring to China...
The same goes for me.Same. My reaction to this news was "wait, he was still alive?!"

Somewhere the family of the late Chilean President Salvador Allende are toasting champagne & partying all night long with the song 'All Night Long'.
