Depends on how much the system breaks down there. If the police feel like their civil leadership has betrayed them (not surprising at this point) and see the rioters invading the suburban neighborhoods where they themselves live... I could very easily see a kind of police coup de tat happening. Police just saying that they don't answer to the mayor anymore and enforcing the law regardless. It would still take a while to get to that point though. So... three days or so? (God, I hope I'm joking, but who even knows at this point)

False altruism, what Rand mistakes as actual altruism. She was right in part, right in so many ways, yet also so glaringly wrong.
Yet history records this, and thinkers have noted this. Plato among others talked about this, the idea of someone who publicly appeared just, but was in fact manifestly unjust. Given what is happening today, I believe his myth of Gyges is quite relevant.
People don't observe what is observable, and don't read what has been written. These people have been explained in many book and many sources, we have been warned about such things in the past by eminent scholars, perhaps we see the machine men coming with their machine minds, or malformed men lacking that essential trunk of humanity, or perhaps the last men...no matter whom they are the hollow men cometh, and this is how the world ends.

Yes they are, but their number is their strength, from the many comes the one. Like so many sticks lashed together, they are stronger as a group, but would snap individually. And perhaps it is the converse for the opponents, or a partial converse. They are strong individually and do their best acting autonomously, for the full they are weaker together, or for the partial it is not nearly as effective, or simply the sum of parts is greater than the whole.

Still, that’s the thing, they’re weak in mind and spirit more than anything else
If they face actual opposition that won’t back down and is subsequently also backed up by other groups or people, that’s when they start getting scared
That’s why they’re doing their best with “soft power” to slowly marginalize and weaken their opposition
Now they’re using Hard Power and if the people aren’t so dumb or indoctrinated, these Hollow Men will find a suddenly large number of people against them
From what I know, you Americans don’t like actually speaking your politics out of fear, so odds are there’s more people likely to be active when push comes to shove
