Actually I wonder why they haven't used them yet during these riots. Its literally purpose designed for the job of dealing with riots before they get out of hand

As far as I know, the ADS isn't in civilian use, it's just military.

If it is....I dunno, optics maybe? US cops are really reluctant to use water cannons because it looks bad and reminds people of the civil rights protests where water cannons were badly misused, I'd imagine there's probably considerable reluctance to turn something nicknamed "the pain ray" on US civilians.

Something I'm just idly speculating and not really thinking all that hard about:

The Left wants to claim that the hooligans breaking shit and hurting businesses are secret cops or Nazis, while conservatives argue that they're antifa. But at the end of the day, does it really matter all that much what those scumbags believe? Really, if we can get both sides to unite on making that shit doesn't really happen and forcibly restraining people who try that shit, that's the really important thing. And at the end of the day, I think it's pretty well accepted that the way cops are doing things has got to change. Focus on what unifies us as Americans, not on what divides us.

I'm not sure that's feasible. Sure, in an ideal world, we could sit down and have a national conversion over this, devise new standards, find a path forward.

In the current world? No way. A discussion requires a fundemental belief from both parties that they other side is operating in good faith and wants the same thing you do. Given that large chunks of both parties are just going to fling accusaions of racism or mindless anti-cop bias at the other, and given that there's decent chance both those accusations have some basis in fact, I don't see any way to really have a productive exchange of ideas or any willingness to admit error and compromise.
