This has also led to a direct growth in the influence of fundamentalist Muslim groups pressuring for Sharia law in order to stop the degradation of their society.

Its a natural result of devolving to a shame culture. In a shame culture looking like you are doing the correct thing is more important that actually doing the right thing, because your reputation acts as a substitute for morality. This is a three hundred year step backwards to before the enlightenment, and is why there are people legitimately contemplating bringing back dueling.
