The Silent Majority never wanted a second World War either, but they got one anyways; because their desires are irrelevant when those who have the power are making decisions. The sad fact of the matter is, conflict is caused by the Loud Minority, while the bulk of the cost for said conflict is left for the Silent Majority to pay.
That said, I agree with GoldRanger; this conflict isn't a "boots on the ground" traditional war. It's a cultural Civil War, where the battlegrounds are institutions of our society, and the worst of the violence will look more like riots and gang wars. What we are looking at, I think, is the beginning of something that, if we lose, may one day be compared to the rise of the Nazis to power in Germany, or the Communists in Russia.
