Anime & Manga General Anime/Manga Discussion

Despite all their massive blunders, I do love the fact that Netflix chose to close Pride Month with an adaptation of one of the least poltically correct manga I can think of:

Not complaining at all, but how the hell did this get made?!

...What the fuck?

Not that I'm complaining, but seriously; what the fuck?! Apparently they announced this back in February, and yet this is the first I've heard that this was going to happen; I wonder how much of the manga they're going to cover, or how they're going to deal with the fact that the source material has been on indefinite hiatus for over a decade. Considering the people behind it (Netflix notwithstanding), that being studio LIDENFILMS (who was behind the more recent adaptation of The Heroic Legend of Arslan) and director Takaharu Ozaki (who also directed Goblin Slayer), my expectations are high.

By the way? The Bastard anime is absolutely amazing. It kinda messed with my head a little bit with how different it was from the 1992 OVA, but apparently its far closer to the source material then that was, and is also somehow far more raunchy. I mean seriously; look at this ending sequence:

naked waifus falling from the sky...

That looks like a racing game. What's the gimmick?

It is about racing and specifically about participating in a racing championship but also involves some love and romance and tensions and whatnot between different team players. There are different teams participating in this racing championship and they all want to win the grand prize.

I watched this TV show back when I myself was 12. I'm now 30.

I think the anime didn't do so well due to a few factors:
  • It felt like the show skipped an entire season establishing the characters, the fact they were underdogs, and how the racing system worked.
  • It subbed out the combat element of the original micro-series for plain old racing, which made the 3v3 format weird and hard to understand, especially since they were always racing on that track. It probably would've made more sense if it was actually set in a natural environment, where anything but speed was the dominating factor.
  • I've seen literally cooler crashes and stuff in Sail GP than most of the action in this anime.
  • Takashi wasn't necessarily the best main character ever, which really made it a drag when episodes focused on him too much.
Like, I give it props for trying to do something different with the mecha genre and the top notch voice cast, but it didn't really do it for anybody, as far as I can tell.

Excellent analysis!

Anyway, off-topic, but do you think that Mordred from Fate is a lesbian? Her face does suggest it:

Something I've noticed about Ascendance of a Bookworm is that plot gets very shojo; to the point where it comes across as more reminiscent of older isekai like Fushigi Yugi than its contemporaries, and some of the light novel spoilers I've read wouldn't have felt out of place in The Rose of Versailles.

I sure hope Ferdinand becomes more likeable soon.

Rose of Versailles was pretty good. I liked the first half of the show, which was really stylish. Then the director died and the second half is okay.

Do you guys think that there will ever be another season of SAO after Season 4?

Depends on how profitable adapting further arcs would be. Alicization had some hype behind it but I haven't really heard any excitement for anything else. A remake of the first arc, Aincrad, adapting Progressive might be more likely.

favorite SAO scenes?

Kirito vs Kayaba at the end of Aincrad.

What do you mean by adapting Progressive?
