The Spy x Family anime's first episode is fire. Gonna check out the dub on Friday, when it streams on Twitch. If the dub's good/great, then this show and manga are going to blow up big time.

The dub for Spy x Family is pretty damn good, so that's great. I definitely put this on the list of "anime for non-anime people."
Haven't seen any of the anime, but having stumbled upon the manga just before Easter, I can echo this sentiment for it. I'd heard about it a little beforehand, but had kind of dismissed it when I read the premise, which has the 'sounds promising but I doubt it'd pulled off well' vibe to it..Except it very much does pull it off well. Author does a good blend of humor, intrigue, heartwarming, and pretty gruesome violence that occasionally peeks into some deeper sentiments with characters thoughts or actions.

At some point I'll have to give the animated form a shot, because it seems like it'd be good candidate for the comedic timing and character voice that allows.
I'll just have to fit that in-between my copious free time.

Haven't been able to find the Manga. The first three chapters are available at Mangadex, but the only other place I know to get it is buying physical copies from Amazon.

Andybody got a Sietch-friendly source?

Not to derail too much (maybe PM me answers so we don't derail here?) What's a good anime to watch if I just want to get away from American woke bullshit? I Want a good, deep story, and not a kid's show.

I've always liked everything Dragon Ball. And I like the Armitage Polymatrix series but haven't really ventured into anime beyond that.

Here are a few of my go-to recommendations. Last I checked, you can find most of these shows on streaming services such as Crunchyroll (the king of anime streaming) or Netflix and you can easily watch them on your TV. There are other shows I would recommend, such as Gundam, but those have complicated watch orders and aren't on any official streaming sites, which makes watching them more complicated and aren't really good entry-anime for a new anime watcher.

You can use this website to find out which legal streaming services have which anime (or if an anime has been legally licensed at all. Most shows older than 15-20 years aren't).

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

This is almost universally the default go-to anime recommendation. Highest rated anime on MyAnimeList for the past 12 years, and for good reason. It is set in a fantasy world that resembles 1910 Germany. Two brothers who are alchemists (aka wizards) lost their bodies in a ritual gone wrong, and sign up in the army as military mages so they can gain access to restricted knowledge so they can try repair their bodies. Meanwhile, there is a conspiracy within the military. Lots of intrigue. Adventure/thriller. 64 episodes, English dub is good.

Seirei no Moribito is set in fantasy Edo period Japan. A female mercenary, Balsa, is tasked with hiding the prince from assassins sent by his own father because he's supposedly possessed by a demon that will doom the kingdom. Don't expect much fighting. Slice of life with some drama. 24 episodes, English dub was okay but I'd check out the Japanese subs if I watched it again.

Kekkai Sensen, aka Blood Blockade Battlefront.

New York city is taken over by aliens from the Cthulu realm. Our protagonist, Leonardo, goes to New York and gets caught up in fun shenanigans. 12 episodes, English dub is good.

Fate/Zero.

In modern day Tokyo, 7 wizards summon legends and heroes from ages past to fight in a tournament over the Holy Grail, a magical artifact that it is said to grant any wish. 24 episodes. In retrospect, the show was slow at times, but it did an excellent job hooking me in with everyone's motivations and all of the alliances and conspiracies being formed. English dub was fine. If you liked F/Z, the story is continued in Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks (TV show).

Legend of the Galactic Heroes

Two galactic superpowers are at war with each other: the Free Planets Alliance, and the Galactic Empire. The story follows two opposing heroes: Yang Wen-Li, who fights for a corrupt democracy, and Reinhard von Lohengramm, who seeks to ascend and become a benevolent dictator over humanity. Their struggle will decide the fate of the galaxy. Great aesthetics, classical music, strategizing, and a little too much standing around and talking about philosophy. Overall great.

Watch order is My Conquest Is the Sea of Stars (a movie that establishes the central cast) -> Overture to the New War (a movie remake of the first three episodes) -> watch the 110 episode series, starting at episode 3.

The legal rights to LoGH have been lost. Technically no one can license the series, nor is there anyone left who can sue you. So you're fine watching LoGH on whatever site you want. HiDive threw the whole series up on their platform just because they can (no one left who can sue them, after all).

There is no English dub. Subs only.

Death note

A young man finds a notebook wherein he writes peoples names and they will actually die. He then proceeds to try making the world a better place by killing evil people and intimidating would-be evildoers, lowering the crimerate, but he attracts the attention of the authorities who begin hunting for him. He must outwit his greatest adversary, the mysterious detective L. 36 episodes. Dub was not bad but I'd recommend the subs.

Gundam War in the Pocket can be watched by itself without any prior knowledge of Gundam. During a war between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, a team of Zeon agents infiltrate a "neutral" space colony with the mission to destroy a secret Federation mech, called the Gundam, that is being developed there. If they fail, the colony must be nuked. 6 episodes, English dub is good. Last I checked, you couldn't stream it but you could order it on Netflix DVD.

If nothing else I'd suggest having a look through my recommended list in my review thread to find what you're looking for. If you don't want to bother reading through all that, if you could give me an idea of what kind of live-action shows you like, I could maybe recommend something out of what I've seen myself so far. If I was to give you a recommendation for something off the cuff, based on your "good, deep story" bit there, my top three would be Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (and 2nd G.I.G.), Ergo Proxy, and Berserk (1997).

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is a cyberpunk series set in 2030. It follows Section 9 of Japan's Public Security, who are one of those official exists but does super secret stuff type organizations, and do more special ops type stuff involving cyber-terrorism. This is more of a big deal in the future, as most people have at least some technology in them, and some are essentially brains riding around in an android body, which they refer to as "fully prosthetic.," such as Major Kusanagi, the protagonist of the series. People can thus be hacked, and there are plenty of other crimes along the same lines. Something Section 9 stumbles onto, though, involves an incident involving the Laughing Man, a hacker who kidnapped the owner of a micromachine company to try to get him to admit to a plot Section 9 will discover. What made him stand out was that he live-hacked the eyes of anyone nearby in addition to any cameras nearby, which hid his face from everyone except for a couple of homeless men who didn't have any cyber implants. it's an interesting conspiracy involving corporations and government officials, and is ironically topical considering recent events with Covid and treatments for it. The second season follows on to another conspiracy which Section 9 slowly unravels involving immigrants. Just be aware that someone at Production I.G, the studio that made this show, has an axe to grind with the US and takes several shots at us in both seasons, including having an American submarine involved in the evil secret plan of the second season.

Ergo Proxy is another cyberpunk story set in a distant, post-apocalyptic, dystopian future. Something has devastated the biosphere of the planet, leaving only large domed cities as refuge for what remains of humanity. But there's that whole dystopian part, which seems largely inspired by "Brave New World" in that all of human society is planned, with everyone having some specific reason for being. There are also different levels to it, with immigrants/refugees from other domes being at the bottom, treated even worse than the android AutoReivs who act as both servants and companions, because they at least have some planned purpose which they serve. The only downside to them is that lately there has been a "cogito" virus infecting them, which causes them to become self-aware and to develop a will of their own, and usually involves the deaths of any humans unfortunate enough to be nearby when this happens, or who happen to be along the path they take as they attempt to flee the city. The series follows protagonist Vincent Law, who has seemingly become involved in something involving powerful and mysterious human-like creatures known as proxys, which in turn brings him to the attention of the city government. But this is just the beginning, as Vincent and his companions discover the true nature of the domed cities and the people and autoreivs that inhabit them, as well as the proxies themselves.

Berserk (1997) is set in a medieval fantasy world, against a 100-year war between the kingdoms of Chudar and Midland. It follows Guts on his journey as he crushes his enemies and sees them driven before him. Honestly I'd go into it more, but it's getting late. This is a very dark story, though, not nearly as optimistic as say something like LotR. Very well worth the watch, though.

Incidentally you can just watch this on YouTube due to it being in a legal gray area now with no US rights holder. You can find a couple of playlists of the more recent remastered version, but I'd actually recommend this "all in one" upload based of the older DVD releases, as they have English text.

Oh, I'd also second the suggestion of Monster. Basically, it's about a doctor who saves a young boy who turns out to be a serial killer. He ends up framed for the murders, and is on the run himself as he hunts down the now grown killer, and solve the mysteries of his true identity and origin.

Nice suggestions everyone! I think Full Metal Alchemist will be the first one I check out. Well technically second. I tried Drifters and couldn't stand the "camera." The shakiness gave me a headache within 5 minutes.

For a bit of a 90s taste, I suggest El Hazard. Very fun fantasy isekai with the first series being a complete story. Mysterious ruins excavated at a high school end up sending a few students and a teacher to a fantasy world with a 1001 Nights motif, and they find themselves involved with the war between the human nations and the Bugrom race, with superweapons from ancient civilizations and sinister machinations of other parties. Don't bother with the sequels or the AU TV series (though I do love the TV series first opening song)

My bad.

Was tired when I posted this, so must've been thinking of the really short, clip-length fan-dubs I've seen on YouTube every so often. (Which, and you've pointed out why, is a whole different story from dubbing whole episodes, though I hope that's possible to do cheaply and conveniently someday.) Whoops.
Moving to this thread to stop the derail...

I find it fairly unlikely it will be cheap and convenient before AI is capable of acting and doing voices, honestly. The problem is needing so many people. Get a group together who are doing a labor of love with no profit motive and they can work for a little while, but inevitably a clash of egos happen and since they're doing it entirely for fun, once it stops being fun they are likely to abandon the project. For a fandub this is survivable, swapping out a translator typically only means slight differences in grammar choices the audience probably won't notice (Though I do recall massive flamewars regarding the fansub of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagaan over "Grapal" vs. "Gulaparle") but when a voice actor changes it's dramatically noticeable.

Small YouTube clips are usually only done by one or two people trying to play with their voices and it's fairly obvious this is the case, the overacting and silly voices are typically part of the charm. You simply won't find somebody with the range of, say, Tara "I voice-acted half your childhood memories" Strong doing a YouTube clip, she's talented enough for the big leagues and then some.

I haven't been able to get to a con in years. Last I was able to get to was TusCon in Tucson and that was a more general con. Would not mind getting to one to be honest, but summer is busy for me.

Anybody ever seen a FoZ fanfic where Louise's summon enjoys a romp in the hay with Kirche when abducted by Flame?
Bonus - and is caught by his Little Mistress during his Walk of Shame?

So I'm watching Princess Mononoke again (courtesy of Netflix), and a shower thought has struck me.

Doesn't the existence of amputation as a medical procedure effectively crash and burn a good chunk of its plot?
