Remember, snakes and birds are distantly related.

I think this is called paradoxical carnivorism, or something like that. Though maybe this instance doesn't quite count, as seagulls are omnivours. The idea is that sometimes an herbivour will be deficient in some micronutrient that they look at a small critter and think "damn that looks tasty" and gobble it up. So you sometimes see cows or elephants just reach down and eat a small critter whole. Such animals often include: snakes, small birds, puppies, kittens, etc.
