Get ready to re-enter the Matrix.

Lana Wachowski is set to write and direct a fourth film set in the world of “The Matrix,” with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will produce and globally distribute the film. Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich made the announcement on Tuesday.

“We could not be more excited to be re-entering ‘The Matrix’ with Lana,” said Emmerich. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

Seriously, why are they attempting to bring this franchise back after the flops of 2 and 3? Where would they even put a fourth movie in the timeline? My suspicion is that this is just a cheap way of cashing in on nostalgia-bucks...

How often do you see Hollywood bringing something original to the table? These days it's all about the sequels to the prequels to the reboot of a comic book adaptation. I really really WISH to see something entirely original come out, but that's "too risky" apparently.

Also please tell me this isn't going to be directed by sisters "Jupiter Ascending" Watchowski again.

The weird part about this is that I'm not even sure where they'd fit a fourth movie. The ending didn't really leave any opportunity to have the main cast return for a sequel, and since Keanu is back a prequel is out, which leaves... between movies 1 and 2?

And yes, one of the Wachowskis is back, for better or worse. I haven't actually seen Jupiter Ascending or Cloud Atlas, so I'm going to withhold judgement on that for the moment.

Do you really doubt their abity to asspull some excuse for the sequel? Maybe "there was a single Smith clone hidden in the depths of the Matrix that wasn't killed and now he's back", or some bullshit like that.

As much as I enjoy seeing Keanu Reeves exaclty who asked for this. And why should Keanu waste time with this whwn he couls be making more John Wick movies.

The 2010s-20s will forever be known as a barren wasteland and graveyard in which originality wallows, wilts and asphyxiates.

Personally I think that its more a case of Really Really good movies, coming alongside alot of really bad movies, and not so many middle rankers.

I really don't see how they can continue the story. It ended (badly) in a way you can't continue it.

I can't understand how they can justify Keanu and Carrie-Ann coming back, given that their characters both died in the third movie in a pretty definitive way.

Oh, that's easy... just add another layer to the Matrix illusion. Who says anyone in those movies actually knew the true nature of the Matrix? I mean the damn power plant idea was so dumb to begin with... and it's known now that the creators did fully consider the more logical idea of the machines using human brains as computers, and ditched it for reasons unknown. So if the power plant was actually just part of the simulation in a simulation bit, well, the universe just got more logical.

Never mind the logical problems being Zion being rebuilt six times over. I mean WTF?

So we've got that option.

We've also got an option of the main characters just not actually being dead, like Ioseb points out it's not entirely definitive. And Trinity could be a avatar or something.

Also got the option I hope they take, which is simply to ignore the original squeals as never having existed, and create a alternative movie that's a squeal to the original movie's ending where Neo has this definite agenda to try to expose the Matrix to the people inside of it. Cause the actual opening of Reloaded didn't follow that up at all, far from it. Kinda like how Evanglion started to be remade on a more logical basis... until the creator got depressed again and made it fall back off the wagon anyway....

I mourn for Hollywood creativity. It was a good horse, but then they stated beating it in hopes of getting more money, and now the thing is not only dead but half way turned into glue.

I actually liked two and three and I'm still dreading this.

Theres just no way it will be good. The creators barely struggled out the last two with their five remaining collective brain cells while slamming lethal doses of designer drugs. I doubt the last decade has been kind to them.
