Former Japanese PM Shot. (Update: He has expired.)

This reeks of both the CCP, North Korea and certain Global elites. The CCP especially because they have had a hate boner for him for years.
Why wouldn't they? They're in the midst of plotting an invasion of Taiwan, and if Japan militarizes, it is quite hard to continue on with.

Did he release a statement on the assassination?

Yeah.

Al Jazeera said:
The leader of Russia on Friday called Abe’s death an “irreplaceable loss.”

In a telegram to Abe’s family, Vladimir Putin called Abe an “outstanding statesman” who had done a lot to develop “good neighbourly ties between our countries.”

“I wish you and your family strength and courage in the face of this heavy, irreparable loss,” Putin said, according to a statement released by the Kremlin.

Its too earlier to say, but based on what we know that seems unlikely. This wouldn't be the first assassination attempt executed by a lone nutcase, and if this was state sponsored, surely they could get an actual weapon to their agent, and not some pipes duck taped to a 2x4. It would still be difficult to trace who was responsible, and an actual gun has a lower chance of malfunctioning.

My question is why didn't the security detail get him out of danger?

I'm not sure what you mean, he was evacuated by his security detail shortly after the shooting and the guy was tackled the moment he opened fire.

I think it's more a case of "how did that lunatic even get close to Abe in the first place?"

Regardless, that some random with a home made gun could walk up to and assassinate a former Prime Minister, in broad daylight, is a catastrophic failure of the Japanese security service.

Shit happens. What were they supposed to do? Have some telepaths on security? Assassin had good OpSec.

Like the Japanese like to say, it can't be helped.
