If they were married, and weren't both prostitutes, it would be justified. But they are both prostitutes, and knew what they were getting into.
eh Japanese host/ess clubs are different. it is more paying an attractive person to pour drinks and have a conversation with you than sex. which is kinda sad in it's own way. but the cultural differences are there and that is one of the bigger ones.

Officially they don't offer sex, but unofficially it is common, it like massage parlers that provide happy endings. With cultural context, it becomes more obvious that they are prostitutes. Host clubs are a call back to the Japanese institution of prostitution known as Geisha.

but generally it is about the parasocial relationship and being able to pretend for a few hours that an attractive member of the opposite sex is willing to listen to you and maybe hang out. The west doesn't have much for an analog to this. closest I can think of would be like Vtubers but in meatspace and 1 on 1.

Well it's complicated Geisha are still a thing, and some of them are prostitutes, but it's more high class and people say not all of them are.

Also host/ess things could just be like maid cafes where the reason a person would go is sexual but the staff don't actually do anything inappropriate.

So what are people's opinions of Hooters/Twin Peaks?

Because that seems like the American equivalent to maid cafe's in many ways, though without the geisha history to complicate staying 'legit'.

Also think it may be a legacy of kabuki theater mixing with tavern life-style, for maid cafe's.

No maid cafes are more respectable than hooters. Hooters is openly sexual. Maid cafes aren't actually lewd for the most part where they advertise the "assets" of the staff. The appeal of maid caffes is that the customers have fetishes for maids, or nuns, or catgirls. So the are served by them, but it's not diffrent from any restaurant from what I hear except the maids dress up in weird uniforms. The only reason it has a "bad" reputation is because the customers.

slightly better than just straight going to a titty bar but you shouldn't take kids there.

Ok, fair.

Yeah, it's not places I really went by choice, more dragged along; though Twin Peaks wings are decent enough and have nice vareity form the couple time's I've been there, though I'd prefer them from a less sexual establishment.

So a friend suggested Twin Peaks once to watch a football game, and I, a slow on the uptake person, didn't know Twin Peaks = Hooters, basically. Food was eh. 3/10, do not recommend.

But anyway, I'm not sure if he 100% knew that either, because on the drive back (we carpooled), he texted his gf where he'd been, and she texts him the ominous "Oh, how was it?"

The moron: "Great atmosphere."

Yeah, was not aware of it's nature the first time I was taken there, and only went back once with the same person a coupel years later while they were in town.

It's not a place I'd recommend either.

Hooters as far as I know have no cases of paying for a happy ending.
So, it is similar-ish but not exactly.

... I think the issue is more that if someone is a host/ess it is unclear whether they work at a japanese hooters, or at a place that offers prostitution. it can be either or.

Actually thinking about it. the best western equivalent would be a massage parlor.
Some massage parlors offer only massage
Some massage parlors are brothels
And you gotta wonder which one exactly they work at...

Hmm... actually, the correct analogy would be a hooters/massage parlor combo. Yea, MAYBE it is legit just a hooters and a real regular massage.
But the odds they are one of those that offer a happy ending is much higher

Massage parlors actually offer an important service.

You ever had your back go out or tweek out on you or pull something? A good massage can help you heal up from that faster and recover faster, or at least help you deal with the pain.

I know massage parlours offer a valuable service.
I have arthritis and have availed myself to massages. yes

where did you get the notion that I am saying that real massage parlors offering massages are not legitimate businesses?

The only thing I noted, is the fact that some brothels call themselves massage parlors as a form of obfuscation.

Personally Id rather just legalize and regulate prositution.

Get the tax money, keep minors out of the business and clean up the reputation of legitiment massage parlors.

Well... yes and no.
There is no legitimate reason for anyone to ever work in prostitution.
It is not legitimate work. it is harmful for everyone.

I can understand wanting to control it to make it less awful, but we have seen examples of how spectacularly that fails. whether it is forcing people into it via govt, or simply completely legitimizing it and claiming that there is nothing wrong with it
