Boeing company had a neat idea about that M230 30mm autocannon that's slung under the Apache attack helicopter. (Please note, not to be confused with the Bushmaster 30mm autocannon, as both fire different rounds, 30x113 for the M230 vs. 30x173 for the Bushmaster MK44, respectively.)
"What if we could convert that into a ground-mounted weapon to be used like the M2 .50 cal. heavy machine gun, or the Mk. 19 40mm high-velocity automatic grenade launcher...?"
A seemingly neat idea, the concept was toyed around with, both as a tripod mounted weapon and mounted on vehicles such as the Humvee and the FAV, if the pictures below are accurate.
Unfortunately, it also had the dubious distinction as a weapon that was pushed by none other than Mike Sparks and his clique as a weapon that could be fitted to the Gavin---er, M113. Which honestly, doesn't sound like too bad an idea, on paper at least.
Also unfortunately, it doesn't seem the weapon had any buyers who were interested, officially at least. I do wonder what the recoil would be like with such a weapon, especially in a tripod mount and how well you would need to sandbag the tripod legs to make it manageable? I also wonder if the recoil would have any adverse effect over time on vehicle pintle mountings? And how would all this effect accuracy from a non-stabilized mount? It is an autocannon, after all, but a cool concept.
@Husky_Khan , sadly I don't think Rambo would've been able to hip-fire this.
