So similar to my last thread but this time around instead of choosing Starfleet personnel or people from the Star Trek universe, you have to choose canon characters from beyond the Star Trek Universe. So settings like Star Wars, Babylon 5, Farscape, Stargate, Andromeda, Firefly/Serenity, The Orville, Battlestar Galactica, Mass Effect and so on and so forth.

Some loose guidelines for this thought experiment.

- The Starship will likely be a Galaxy-class vessel engaged in a similar mission as to that of other Galaxy-class starships of the time, exploration and diplomacy and defensive patrols and take place in the mid to late 24th century and thus much of the Federation history (just like in TNG itself) was still ill or poorly defined.
- You have to choose canon characters not in the Star Trek universe. And preferably choose main characters from these other franchises.
- The characters have to practically fit into not just Star Trek but also make sense to somehow being in Starfleet and fitting in with the crew without being overpowered, not fitting into the setting without a reasonable explanation, or otherwise series breaking. (ex. Master Chiefs, Chaos Lords and SHODAN style AI's need not apply)
- Head canon. The Enterprise stretched a bit of plausibility to allow a Klingon, a one of its kind android, and a security officer from a failed war ridden colony world onto its bridge crew. Feel free to make plausible head canon for how your all star crew got a Quarian (Mass Effect) engineer (eg just travelling and joined Starfleet, did the Quarians join the Federation etc) or how Dylan Hunt (Andromeda) grew up on a Human colony from a High G world that had its own professional defense force etc. No need to go crazy overboard but half of the fun will be incorporating brief bits of explanation for the how and why each of these crew members ended up on a flagship of the Federation. Other explanations might be simpler. Walsh (Firefly/Serenity) was a really good Human pilot and go from there. If you choose a Jedi character meanwhile... chances are they won't have any Jedi abilities, but might be naturally empathic or exceptionally intuitive/reflexive at best as well as perhaps martially inclined.
- Ultimately the canon characters you choose, its mostly their personalities and character and values that'll be ported over but their life experiences will obviously be rooted in whatever amalgamation of modified Star Trek based head canon you conjure up.

I think they'll work, had to scrape the barrel, and might have to change some things around. You can ask for my reasoning for some of the choices. All of them have a reason, some are half meme/half serious.

Captain: Captain Adama (Original Battlestar Galactica)

First Officer: Commander Shepard (Mass Effect)

Chief Engineer: Dr. Shen (Xcom)

Science Officer: Samantha Carter (Stargate SG-1)

Tactical Officer: Michael McNeil (Tiberian Sun)

Communications Officer: Courier Six (Fallout: New Vegas)

Security Officer: Artyom Alekseyevich Chyornyj (Metro series)

Operations Officer: Amanda Waller (DC)

Doctor: Dr. House (House M.D.)

Helm/Conn: Lt Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Top Gun)

Counselor: Commissar Ciaphas Cain (Warhammer 40k)

Civilian Morale Officer/Bartender: Henry (Kingdom Come: Deliverance)

Replaceable Ensign: Kenny McCormick (South Park)

GooseActual

We go hard on Earth!
Captain: Jacob Keyes (Halo) [tough, respected, capable commander, slightly aloof, not particularly approachable, yet is trusted implicitly by the crew]

First Officer: Zoe Washburn (Firefly) [strong, slightly more.... loose with the rules, but tough as nails yet approachable and has an ear to the ground regarding crew welfare]

Chief Engineer: Mark Watney (The Martian) [we need someone to crack some jokes and why not the committed survivor and master of making shit do stuff it wasn’t designed to do]

Science Officer: Bruce Banner (MCU, no hulk) [felt like the treknobabble solutions would be up his alley]

Tactical Officer: Alex Hopper (Battleship) [best option I could think of, someone who used tactical ingenuity to defeat superior opponents]

Communications Officer: legit have no idea.

Security Officer: Talla Keyalli (Orville) [no nonsense, had the physicality to back it up, but is well liked by the crew]

Operations Officer: Android (Dark Matter) [basically Data, who was the the best OpsO, extremely capable, and opens Data like story archs]

Doctor: DJ (event horizon) [doctor with a dark history, slightly removed from the others, he’s seen some shit]

Helm/Conn: Hera Syndulla (Rebels) [a galaxy class is no hot rod, so the Mavericks are out, rather someone who loves their ship like a baby and would do anything to keep it safe.]

Counselor: whoever the bartender is, no need for redundancy.

Civilian Morale Officer/Bartender: Plo Koon (Star Wars) [not like Jedi mode, but he seemed to have a good moral center and cared a lot]

Replaceable Ensign: Cyril Figgis (archer) [not incompetent but generally useless, mostly cuz I can’t wait for him to die and be replaced again haha.]

Edited for expanding

Going to comment, that I think I made the best choice for replaceable ensign, because you now have a reusable redshirt.
Very green.

Excellent! With this expanded from Star Trek...I can actually come up with some characters besides Kirk and Patrick Stewart-in-space!

And I intend to go for a thematic focus of maximum-80s for the hell of it.

Captain: Martin Riggs (of 'Lethal Weapon')

First Officer: Charles "Chappy" Sinclair (of 'Iron Eagle')

Chief Engineer: Angus 'Mac' MacGuyver (of 'MacGuyver'...obviously)

Science Officer: Dr. Buckaroo Banzai (of 'The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai')
-Science Officer II, Science Harder: "Doc" Brown (of 'Back to the Future', because I couldn't settle on one or the other)

Tactical Officer: 'Snake' Plisskin (of 'Escape from...')

Communications Officer: Rick Deckard (of 'Blade Runner')

Security Officer: John McClane (of 'Die Hard')

Operations Officer: John Matrix (of 'Commando')

Doctor: 'Hawkeye' Pierce (of 'MASH')

Helm/Conn: Bo Duke (of 'Dukes of Hazzard')

Counselor: (Admiral) Al Calvicci (of 'Quantum Leap')

Civilian Morale Officer/Bartender: 'Coach' Pantusso (of 'Cheers')

Replaceable Ensign: Private Hudson (of 'Aliens')

So we check the box of 'renegade, do-what-he-likes and screw the Prime Directive' Captain with an XO that might be more stable. The Enginner can cobble together whatever BS is necessary per episode using string and pocket lint, while the Science officers tinkle with the more technical fiddly-bits which might be necessary.

I'm also particularly proud of the Helmsman. Rebel yells and burnouts IN SPAAAACE!
The Star Trek intro really would be improved by someone letting out a wild, excited 'Yee-Haw!' just before the ship goes to warp.:p

Good grief... imagine all of the shouting matches on that ship. Though I guess with Martin Riggs as Captain he won't have to threaten fake suicide or self harm to get people to follow him. With how often the Enterprise was infiltrated by various alien entities I expect at least three or four Bridge Crew standoffs per season with each of the Bridge Crew members aiming Phasers at each other as they all start nervously laughing and then all shooting each other and remarkably the one person who didn't use a stun setting somehow vaporizing the alien infiltrator by sheer luck.

Chief Engineer MacGuyver is going to be the one saving them all more often then any other character I feel.

Captain: James Holden (The Expanse)

First Officer: Tanya Degurachaff (Youjo Senki/Saga of Tanya the Evil)

Tactical Officer: Garrus Vakarian (Mass Effect)

Communications Officer: Tassadar (Starcraft)

Security Officer: Sosuke Sagara (Full Metal Panic)

Operations Officer: Hayate Yagami (MGLN)

Doctor: Doctor Strange (MCU)

Helm/Conn: Kara Thrace (nBSG)

Counselor: Inara Serra (Firefly)

Civilian Morale Officer/Bartender: Francis John Patrick Mulcahy (MASH)

As for how this crew was assembled, it's simple; Q happened.

In rough order of command authority... :p

Captain: Captain Sarah McEvedy (Battletech)
- Though not from a canine Clan, the Skunk Bears were pretty close. Born and raised the United States on Earth, Sarah McEvedy part of the subset of Earth Starfleet officers who have a decidedly more military background and viewpoint. Despite her emphasis on the military and tactical however, Sarah McEvedy is also a strong believer in the ideas of the Federation including free thinking and democracy. She is a stringent believer in constant improvement through training, technology and bringing innovative Federation values of adaptability and ingenuity to her starship operations. Her own strong sense of morals and honor influences everything she does.

First Officer: Commander Jeanette Deveraux (Wing Commander)
- A native of Belgium on Earth, Jeanette Deveraux was and still is considered a famously skilled pilot and helmswoman. A serious, by the book officer, she is calm, cool and unflappable. She possessed an excellent battlefield awareness and had a naturally analytical nature, preferring to rely on reason and rational concepts then relying on 'instinct.' As a leader she was considered a bit cold, even dispassionate but what she lacked in open camaraderie was replaced by her constant passion for pushing those under her to improve themselves. Her professional and taciturn nature turned out to be just as inspiring.

Tactical Officer: Lieutenant Commander Samantha Carter (Stargate SG-1)
- Another Starfleet Officer hailing from the United States and a skilled helmswoman herself, Samantha Carter could've chosen the senior position in any department of the Federations flagship thanks to her excellent service record both in the science and tactical division but ultimately chose the role of tactical officer, realizing that she could still apply her vast scientific knowledge to the ships primary mission of exploration since tactical operations would only be a secondary role on this deployment. She'll see this as another step up to command of her own starship in the near future.

Doctor: Lieutenant-Commander Mordin Solus (Mass Effect)
- A Salarian hailing from the Federation Planet of Sur'kesh, Doctor Mordin Solus is a brilliant Doctor and Geneticist. Though he never attended Starfleet Academy, Dr. Solus attended an equivalent if not superior medical and government program on Sur'kesh. Prior to being assigned to Starfleet, Dr. Mordin Solus led Salarian Science Teams and Special Task Forces who were charged with dealing with all manners of biological threats and dangers. Though his passion is endless research on the big medical crisis that threaten the galaxy, Dr. Solus is also driven by a desire to practice medicine on a more personal level as well, finding an appeal in just 'healing' people while still never giving up on his countless research projects. His placement on this Federation flagship was seen as a lucrative opportunity to pursue both of those passions.

Security Officer: Lieutenant Cassandra Anderson (Dredd)
- Cassandra Anderson is a telepathic mutant born on a Mega Hive City on a failed colony world. She lost her parents at an early age to radiation induced cancer and spent her youth evading drug addled rape gangs, she eventually volunteered to join one of the most militant government militias on the planet whose goal was to arbitrate justice. Despite her skills and natural intellect, she failed her aptitude tests and would never rise to the higher ranks of the colonies Arbiters and thus took the first opportunity to leave the colony and entered Starfleet. Despite her violent and dangerous upbringing, Cassandra is a thoughtful individual and has applied her life experiences to her Starfleet education and complimented with her telepathy, has proven an excellent asset to oversee this starships security.

Chief Engineer: Chief Bao-Dur (Star Wars: KOTOR)
- He is from an independent Iridonian colony, his planet was devastated by a militaristic species. Bao-Dur soon joined Starfleet independent, initially as an Enlisted Crewmember. His literal genius with technology including his assistance in the development of many weapons, shields and other accessories soon had him rocketing through the enlisted ranks and landed him on a fast track to Chief Engineer of one of the Federations flagships. Further showing his ingenuity, during one battle he actually lost his arm in combat but soonafter designed a replacement arm based off of repulsor technology. He is often soft spoken and mild mannered, with a light personality prone to dry wit and a sarcastic sense of humor. He is a deeply conscientious individual.

Science Officer: Lieutenant Winston (Overwatch)
- He's a super intelligent, genetically engineered gorilla. Personality wise he is an awkwardly gentle giant who tends to be violence averse though far from a pacifist. Like Bao-Dur, he was placed on this crew because of his even more exceptional nature and the diverse crew would look great on pamphlets. Don't call him a monkey.

Operations Officer: Lieutenant Curie (Fallout 4)
- Curie started off as the casual experiment of a rogue corporations science team as they modified a robot assistances computerized intelligence with ever increasingly and greater amounts of operational freedom so it could conduct its own experiments. The basis of her personality was derived from several of the head scientists ex-girlfriends including fellow female scientists and a French girl he had a fling with. Also entire databanks were uploaded to her. Eventually the robot, named 'Curie' was eventually treated as a Human like any other member of the science team. Unfortunately tragedy struck as the planet the corporation resided on was destroyed by a total atomic conflict, leaving her trapped within the science lab. She was trapped in the research lab for the next eight decades, until discovered by Federation explorers. During her time sequestered underground, she developed a concept for a synthetic humanoid body she could upload herself into and with Federation assistance, was able to transfer her artificial consciousness to the synthetic humanoid body. She became the second artificial intelligence to attend and graduate Starfleet, after that other single name android...

Counselor: Lieutenant Shepherd Derrial Book (Serenity/Firefly)
- This might be the only ship in Starfleet that carries something close to resembling a Chaplain. Though he fulfills an official role on the ship as its Counselor, much of his past is still an open question even to the command staff. Though the Federation is rather secular and religious belief, much less an openly religious Counselor is quite rare, Derrial Books' genial and sagacious nature has been considered an asset for the crew, while his mysterious past has proven quite the distraction for many to ponder about. Despite his fundamental Christian beliefs, Shepherd Book is considered quite the 'Humanist' for lack of a better term when he provides counsel.

Communications Officer: Ensign Isabel "Dizzy" Flores (Starship Troopers)
- Ensign Flores hailed from Buenos Aires, which was tragically destroyed by the Bug/Parasite menace in 2364 while she was attending Starfleet Academy. Her combat, security and tactical marks were superb and she was a legendary athlete both in secondary school and at Starfleet. She took the role of Communications Officer eagerly, not due to her linguistic background but because of an affinity for tinkering with both advanced and obsolete communications equipment and because she wanted to serve with the best. She's feisty!

Helm/Conn: Ensign Kara Thrace (Battlestar Galactica)
- Hailing from a Fleet family, the only thing that interested Kara more then Fleet service was sports. Hailing from the once lost early generational Human colony of Caprica, Kara Thrace was a pyramid player of some renown and due to her spotty academic record, had a tough choice between service in Starfleet or turning pro. Unfortunately chronic injuries prevented her from pursuing a professional pyramid player career and she enlisted in Starfleet instead and fell in love with flight school. Around the same time she found a deep loathing for even the relaxed protocol of Starfleet. Often reviled by her superiors for her attitude, her skills and brash personality allowed her to continue her career and her exceptional abilities landed her here.

Civilian Morale Officer/Bartender: Michael Garibaldi (Babylon 5)
- Having lived an extremely colorful and complicated life, Michael Garibaldi operates the bar and restaurant aboard the starship. With an extensive background career with United Earth Force and Starfleet Security and Intelligence before briefly dabbling into a private career, Michael Garibaldi seems to be one of the few people who can consider the idea of resigning himself to a five year exploration mission as a 'break' or 'vacation.' An excellent cook, he possesses a lively sense of humor and a laid back, casual demeanor. He is an aficionado of both drinks and fine cigars, though both are of the safer synthetic variety. Unlike the Ship Counselor, much of Garibaldi's prior history is known and despite his status as a civilian, he's often 'consulted' informally by much of the ships crew day to day. He still keeps a Phased Plasma Assault Rifle under the counter just in case of emergencies. RIP.

Replaceable Ensign: Ensign Alyx Vance (Half Life)
- Half Life 3 confirmed.

Replaceable Ensign: Crewmen 1st Class Seamus Harper (Andromeda)
- A naturally brilliant tinkerer and engineer with a plethora of nerdy and geeky habits, Crewman 1st Class Seamus Harper's main role on this starship is for many fans to superimpose their own desires and lusts into his sympathetic point of view and thus facilitate the creation of numerous Harem fanfics and fapfics to help grow the popularity of the show and even if less then successful, propagate a healthy cult following to sustain the series as long as possible if not on syndication, then one of many streaming services.

I obviously didn't try to pick the best command crew... but I think they should provide an easy seven seasons of both stand alone episode stories and various character based story arcs. Every character is from a different franchise for maximum diversity. The Captain and First Officer on their own aren't exceptionally compelling characters but I wanted to fill out the rest of the roster with far more interesting personalities who can operate under the firm aegis of the two (contrasting) professional officers. Plus there's a nice division between the researchers and the military types but the latter don't seem too obstructionist for the former. I also slanted for a female heavy crew in order to get those social justice points. So double win for me when the harem fapfics are written by this new series legion of fans.

Also force sensitive so she can do that Troi thing about sensing things.

Civilian Morale Officer/Bartender: Jha'dur (Babylon 5) - Dilgar: A cute as a button catgirl with a mysterious past. The only thing more wild then her past is her mixed drinks. THEY ARE TOO DIE FOR!

Captain: Commander Adama (Original BSG) - He really just seems like the ideal leader, Lorne Green did an amazing job in that role and very nearly carried the entire series himself.

First Officer: Deca-Commander the Princess Lafiel Abriel. For some reason I see Lafiel only becoming more awesome and more mature faster and ending up a better ruler of the Empire if, as a Deca-Commander in her young twenties (but who has attack ship command experience, making her fit to be an XO on a larger vessel) she was seasoned by working under such an experienced officer and confident, natural leader as Commander Adama.

Chief Engineer: Tali'Zorah vas X nar Rayya. Another vote for Tali's amazing engineering skills to keep this ship together.

Science Officer: Agatha Heterodyne. Obviously.

Tactical Officer: Aeryn Sun. Enough said.

Communications Officer: Claudia Grant, Robotech. Competent, witty, good officer to pull the crew together.

Security Officer: Dayna Mellanby, Blake's 7. Expert at weapons and unarmed combat who is reliably able to defeat those who seem stronger than she is.

Operations Officer: Jarod from the Pretender. Is he an Ops officer? No, but the role is unique to Star Trek, and Jarod can fake it as well as the real thing!

Doctor: Dr. Benjamin Kyle. He conducted life-saving surgery on an energy being. Think about that for a moment.

Helm/Conn: Jenna Stannis, Blake's 7. Loyal, stubborn, skilled at anything, even alien spaceships she should have no right to operate.

Counselor: Jessica Atreides. I think this crew needs a Bene Gesserit to keep things together...

Civilian Morale Officer/Bartender: Jinto Linn! He'll cheer Lafiel up to be along and his comic relief is the kind which makes the rest of the crew happy. And as a supply officer, he'll make sure they always have beer.

Replaceable Ensign: Mr. T. He won't let himself be replaced, so I get an extra main character!

That's an inspired Engineer choice... and very punny as well. I applaud you.

It looks like it'd be a fun ship to be honest. Susan Ivanova and Malcolm Reynolds would be an almost inverse of the Picard-Riker relationship in some degrees with Malcolm's irreverencies and eccentricities and Susan Ivanova's very cereal attitude. And I love the bit with Garrus… glad he's showing up in his appropriate roles!

Hux was excellently chosen as well. And Alfred Pennyworth is an inspired choice, though I'm not too keen on his scathingly sarcastic and darker interpretation in The Dark Knight Returns as opposed to other versions.

Just to shamelessly bump up more ancient Versus threads I think may still have traction...

Here's another ideal Starfleet Crew that (almost) isn't from Star Trek.

Captain: Jack Aubrey (Master And Commander: The Far Side of the World)
- I mean he's basically the best fighting Captain of the era and based on Thomas Cochrane no less. Granted I'm still using the film version of characters but that shouldn't change much in the fact that Captain Aubrey is a very seasoned, resourceful and skilled Commander with plenty of respect for his men and able to command it as well and being adaptable to new situations, including the many turn of the century advances of technology they may soon be encountering.

First Officer: James Cook (Assassins Creed)
- A good counterbalance to Captain Jack Aubrey. James Cook started in the merchant navy before joining the Royal Navy and despite his humble nature and intellectual pursuits of exploration and cartography, he was also a skilled commander in naval combat. His personality and intellectual contrasts with Captain Aubrey would undoubtedly compliment the Captain and his loyal and dedicated nature, combined with his softer spoken personality would further that positive relationship as his point of view and personality would help him provide better counsel to the Captain as a good XO should.

Chief Engineer: Jes-Tereth (Warcraft)
- Instead of my original idea of finding a Scottish character, I figured I could pluck someone that actually knows how to operate a flying vessel so you know... she can help the rest of the cast get halfway to figuring out how to operate a 24th century starship. She might feel like a bit of an NPC, but honestly, that is almost fine for a Chief Engineer. She'll give the ship what they need.

Science Officer: Stephen Maturin (Master And Commander: The Far Side of the World)
- Always need a principled (fighting) Naturalist to constantly butt heads with the more military minded command structure. Plus his views on flogging and the like would be shared by the Operations Officer, which should make things even more interesting. Plus Naturalist is basically the same as Science Officer, only cooler in every way.

Tactical Officer: James Norrington (Pirates of the Caribbean)
- It seems like James Norrington would be a better Security Officer but unfortunately I've seen him get outwitted a fair bit in the films when it comes to security. But I'm pretty sure he's a pretty good Tactical Officer, so that's exactly where I'm going to place him. Plus like Worf, I'm sure Norrington will get plenty of chance to use his swordsmanship when fending off boarding parties or whatever.

Communications Officer: Samara (Mass Effect)
- Stranded on some low tech planet after a space survey gone wrong, this is Samara's best chance at... getting back to wherever she is from. Of course being a young Maiden, she'll have plenty of time to play the long game as she figures out how to get this merry band of eccentric monkeys to operate a starship. Despite her apparent knowledge of space travel, it's obviously natural to the rest of the crew that she'd be most useful as the Communications Officer so she can repeat orders and operate the fancy signaling equipment. It's a role she's earned plenty of respect for, since she has a bit of an advantage in operating a lot of these fancy screens, not in the least because she's the only one with real knowledge of spaceship operation, the fact she's an exotic alien female who can lead the crew to more exotic alien females and because she could likely kick anyones ass on this starship.

Security Officer: Shay Cormac (Assassins Creed)
- Having a highly skilled swordsman and all around combatant whose spent much of his life both on land and at sea hunting creatures and people far deadlier then himself, Shay Cormac would be an excellent security chief. He has a strong sense of honor, and duty, and selflessness and despite his sometimes brash nature has shown plenty of room to grow and mature. And as an elite combatant he'll be hard for adversaries to match wits or blades with.

Operations Officer: Horatio Hornblower (Hornblower TV Series)
- A very introspective officer who excelled at mathematics and navigation and possesses excellent capability of being able to rapidly reaction and organize his thoughts and intent as well as general skill and cunning. His self doubt and almost constant engagement in double guessing himself prevents him from rising to Captaincy on this vessel, but his analytical and sharp mind would make him an excellent Operations Officer. Hope he doesn't suffer from space sickness.

Doctor Cook: Louis (Little Mermaid)
- Who needs a Doctor when a Cook basically serves the same purpose? Yeah that's what I thought and Louis is the best in the business. Not only a royal family level cook of quality, but he's masterful at prepping all manners of delicious seafood.

Helm/Conn: Aranessa Saltspite (Warhammer Fantasy)
- Being the mutant daughter of the Sea God Manaan with swordfish legs and a quiet and abrasive personality and an origin shrouded in mystery might be a bit offputting in general, but being a half fish, Norscan pirate hating, daughter of a Sea God is also what will likely make her the perfect and almost near h4x version of a Helmsman.... Helmswoman. Pilotess...

Counselor: Emergency Medical Hologram (Star Trek)
- I mean they have to ask something how the ship works... and it's not like he's going anywhere. Plus it's not like this ship actually needs a Doctor or anything.

Civilian Morale Officer/Bartender: Joshamee Gibbs (Pirates of the Caribbean)
- He's had a storied career and the amount of lore and impressive memory he has impressive. But he is also susceptible to filthy piracy. Fine for probing for advice but you sure as hell don't want him anywhere in command responsibility.

Replaceable Ensign: Murrtog & Mulroy (Priates of the Caribbean)
- I mean... c'mon... who else?

Mmmm... imagine the backstory of this television series.

I shall call it... Star Trek: (Age of) Discovery.
