The circumstances are that he actually Broke his Vows, at his Ordination he made a Promise of Obedience to the Bishop and his successors. He violated this by defying the instructions of his Bishop.
And the Church has some very strict rules about what may be placed on an Altar. His actions in this regard most definitely qualify as Blasphemy, I'm genuinely surprised that didn't result in Excommunication.
(Political activity and continuing to call yourself a Priest after being laicized might do it though)

I will note that Fr James Martin is still fully active, despite being massively pro-homosexuality, defying the Church's teaching on abortion (he is massively pro-choice and considers abortion to be a moral good), celebrates mass with rainbow flags draped on the altar, appears at political events supporting left wing politicians and causes, uses money collected at masses he conducts to finance the same politicians and causes, etc.

But yes, IMO that is possible. As the Dogma is more or less the same AND the Orthodox Church is definitely NOT "liberal" my friends are much more likely to go Orthodox than Protestant.

IMO the CC is dancing a balancing act - and has been doing so for almost a century - between its conservative and liberal wings. Not too liberal as not to make the conservative faithful revolt but not too conservative as to make the liberal faithful stop coming to church entirely.

I do not think that the CC is in any way unique here, other faiths facing the same dilemna - and dealing with it in various ways.

I am ignorant of most things Judaic, but aren't Reformed, Conservative and Orthodox wings a reflection of this issue?
