The circumstances are that he actually
Broke his Vows, at his Ordination he made a Promise of Obedience to the Bishop and his successors. He violated this by defying the instructions of his Bishop.
And the Church has some very strict rules about what may be placed on an Altar. His actions in this regard most definitely qualify as Blasphemy, I'm genuinely surprised that didn't result in Excommunication.
