Sports! 2022 Qatar World Cup

Wait, when was this? This sounds hilarious.
First match, the captain tried to wear a "One Love" band, with the LGBT colors on it. He was stopped and the team was forbidden from wearing for any future games.

Come their next match, the entire team cover their mouths to protest their silencing. The japanese team curbstomps them, then the german team got nothing but mocking imitation of their stunt while being waved bye-bye. The leftoids throw a fit over everyone refusing to play the "Fellate the homos or else" game, everyone has a laugh at them.

The "german" team comes "home" with their tails between their legs to the sneering mockery of native germans and foreigners who have little love for the LGBT faction.

All in all, a fitting demonstration of how worthless the Leftoids and their cause are.

Damn, that sounded fucking amazing to watch. I'm sad I missed it. :(

What is Netherlands doing there? I thought the other good Soccer Team is Brazil or something with that Pele guy.
LOL!
Netherlands are one of the sport's greats, always a dark horse World Cup winner candidate, just behind the heavyweights - Argentina, Brazil, France, Spain, Italy, Germany.
USA barely registers here, it's a 3rd string team - the 1/8th is a quite good result for them. The quarter finals would had been Top Of The World for the USA men's XI.
For the USA not getting raped 5:0 or worse by one of the top teams is a "win".

Now I just want the ROK to destroy Argentina in their match. :)
They will meet in the semi final. The Argies have just shown the Aussies their place, while ROK has Brazil to beat.

Japan-Croatia is an interesting match - Croatia is a solid 2nd stringer, while Japan a notch lower.
For either reaching the quarters will be a good result. For the Japanese - one of their "best evah!"?
Croatia has at least one 3rd place under its belt already.

Thanks for the write up. This is one of the worst results for Germany ever, eh? First time? Second time the national XI did not get past the group stage?

Largest/2nd largest surprise of the event - Morocco wins with Spain.
After goalless 120 minutes, including Extra Time, in a penalty shootout tie-breaker.
As it is a small world, it is likely that their next opponent will be ... Portugal, another neighbour across the Gulf of Cadiz.

EDIT:
Yup - Morocco vs Portugal is one of the QF ties

There's a bit of discussion going around that European teams, bar Portugal, are half-arsing the games out of some sort of protest against Qatar.

I think it's a bit of copium myself, but after seeing how half-efforted some of the penalty games were... I dunno.

Maybe.
Footballers - even if mostly not among the brightest that humanity has to offer - are still human.
And they may be unhappy about having their professional and domestic lives upset by the queer timing, they are not immune to the various controversies surrounding the venue, etc., hence there could be some element of disliking the tournament, of not giving their best.

Another thing is that European teams have never before played a major tournament at such a time and quite a few may simply be underprepared for it.

At least one stadium will be dismantled
Yup. According to this story

the 974 stadium (named thus as it made from such a number of "blocks") is already being dismantled. It was designed to be built from reusable modules. It is rumoured to have found a Good New Home in an African country or Izrael.

Spain lost?

Well, fuck. :( I had £5.00 on Brazil winning and there being over 1.5 goals (2) in the match.

Goddamnit, Brazil. You had one fucking job. sigh
It's soccer.

Two teams can kick the ball around for over two hours without scoring anything and the talking heads in the peanut gallery might laud that as an excellent performance which ended in a draw.

Compare that to basketball were you keep playing overtimes until it isn't tied when the clock reads 0:00.0 and the buzzer sounds. The shot clock also does not take sides and is not your friend.

This is surreal. It's just being reported that Grant Wahl, a Soccer journalist from the US who briefly flared up on the news cycle for being "detained" due to wearing a Rainbow Shirt and attempting to enter a World Cup event in Qatar a few days ago... apparently died within the past few hours, having had some sort of medical issue at the stadium and either dying in transport to the hospital or at the hospital itself. It's unclear.

His last Tweet was literally just over six hours ago.

😟

In addition to the Rainbow Shirt thing, he had been critical of Qatar and his last article on his Substack was criticizing their use of migrant labor and how the Qataris don't care about controversy around said use of migrant workers and their abuse and exploitation.

Criticism of Qatar in general and its (ab)use of migrant labour in particular has been around since the day it bought was selected as host.
What I mean to say is that he was not some sort of whistleblower in need of "silencing", nor - considering that journos are not known for healthy lifestyles - getting a sunstroke or somethign in the generally unhealthy climate of Qatar is not exactly surprising.

Hence he might had been victim to foul play but natural causes are more likely.
