I remember, back in the day, the Barracks in Basic had areas you could knock the walls out. So you didn't have to go outside in case the base was hit by a nuke.

That meme needs to die.
It completely ignores how you don't have to melt metal structures (e.i. metal beams) to cause them to lose their strength, just heat them past the point the crystals begin to deform. Jet-fuel dooesn't burn hot enough to melt metal beams, but it does burn hot enough to cause them to deform from the weight they were carrying, and gravity did the rest.
Fuck, anyone who watched blacksmithing vids knows this is meme is a lie.

It actually does burn hot enough to melt steel under the right conditions. One of the questions engineers must answer when using hydrocarbon fuels is "How do I cool this?"
